“Madam, I heard you wished to see your physician.”

Eugene, the Portrion estate’s personal physician, entered Sophia’s room with a brief bow.

At first, he had assumed Sophia had summoned him due to her heightened anxiety over the embezzlement scandal. But upon seeing the fourth viscountess seated comfortably on the sofa, yet betraying a hint of tension, he thought he understood the true reason for her summons.

Sophia signaled Eugene with a glance and said,

“Please check Edith’s pulse.”

“I shall do so. Madam Edith, would you kindly lend me your hand for a moment?”

Although pregnancy could be confirmed using blood samples from the fifth month onward, checking the pulse remained the only reliable method during early pregnancy.

As Edith extended her arm, she recalled the expressions of patients at the clinic who had desperately wished for children.

She knew that unless she consciously softened her face, it would remain stiff and unreadable as she faced Eugene.

‘This is the same physician who examined me when Sophia first had me brought here.’

That meant Eugene was among Sophia’s innermost confidants—comparable to Butler Whitman.

He might even know everything Sophia was plotting to swallow up the Portrion household.

Soon, Eugene’s face brightened as he checked Edith’s pulse.

“A great blessing has come upon the viscount’s household… Congratulations, Madam Edith.”

The moment Eugene confirmed it, Edith smiled—just as she had seen countless times at the clinic.
