She was so disappointed in herself for becoming such a pitifully indecisive person. Ophelia let out a small sigh and rose from her seat. The man who had been sitting quietly on the bed, gazing at her back, flinched in surprise.

Meeting his wide golden eyes directly, Ophelia said,

“I don’t particularly like Reden.”

In truth, Idren already knew this fact as well.

In his previous life, Idren had witnessed how she dealt with his homeland. He himself had been the one who saw Reden’s downfall—even though she never did.

Idren thought she had every right to feel that way. After all, he himself had once refused to consider Aglante his own country.

He had taken the throne merely because he wanted to survive—not out of any grand cause or noble justification, but simply because staying up in those snow-capped mountains would have surely killed him, so he came down.

Yet once seated on the throne, he realized there was far too much he had to do.

As he dealt with each pressing matter one by one, Idren eventually came to understand: it was the late king and his family who had driven him with whips and hardship; everyone else had merely existed beneath them.

Even if the masses seemed cold or hateful toward him, that was simply the nature of an undefined, faceless crowd. In reality, each person lived their own life—and naturally, none of them harbored fierce hatred toward him.

Of course, he hadn’t realized these truths entirely on his own. He had Penrel, Salode, and others who treated him kindly. Through their eyes, Idren was finally able to confront truths he’d long ignored about Aglante.

Ophelia likely had no such people in her life.

He didn’t know much about her past, but Idren could tell that people hadn’t been kind to Ophelia.

When they were children, she had been the only one to take his hand—the hand everyone else mocked. He could easily imagine how much must have happened to change someone like her so drastically, even without hearing it firsthand.
