Netepel had even gone so far as to bring up Haslen, insisting that her marriage had been a mistake. Though she usually paid heed to her friend’s opinions, his insistence had been so excessive that it stirred resentment in her.

Moreover, she even doubted whether he had truly come to Reden during that same period in the past. If Netepel really had visited Reden, he certainly could have contacted her easily enough.

Yet Netepel had given no word at all. Though Mahanas had disapproved of their association when they were young, that was no longer the case after Netepel had come of age and been officially recognized as an imperial prince—but still, Netepel remained silent.

With no one else to discuss these unresolved doubts with, Ophelia tilted her head slightly and looked down at the servant standing below the dais, presenting a small box and a sealed letter.

Since no one without permission could ascend the dais where the throne sat, the attendant standing behind her stepped forward to accept the items instead.

Ophelia had other matters to attend to besides opening Netepel’s letter, so she ordered the servant to set them aside for now.

She addressed the man who still stood bowing before her.

“Go and tell your master I received them well.”

Netepel’s servant seemed surprised that she didn’t immediately examine the gift and letter, but he withdrew as instructed. Once the servant had disappeared, Ophelia called the knight standing behind her.

“Hazelle.”

Then Ophelia hesitated briefly. They weren’t particularly close, so perhaps it would have been more proper to address her as Chesa.

But the knight with hair like sunset hues had already stepped beside her. Ophelia spoke to the knight, whose ever-smiling expression seemed gentle even in stillness.

“Go tell Gilrod’s daughter to come here.”

Hazelle replied cheerfully to her order and descended the dais. Ophelia watched as the knight strode briskly toward the distant woman with brown hair.
