Because he wanted to know the reason, Namie had gone around asking everyone, but no one gave him a satisfying answer.

All Namie knew was what one of the maids who had cared for him had secretly whispered.

“It’s because we lost the war.”

“What war?”

“The war between Brinwell and Aglante.”

Aglante was his father’s country. And Brinwell was where he was now—the country of his mother.

Their relationship had clearly been very good, so why had a war broken out?

Wars happened between countries that didn’t get along. Though his studies had been temporarily suspended because the scholar who usually taught him couldn’t come from Aglante, Namie still understood that much.

But when he tried to ask the maid a bit more about the war, she quickly excused herself and left.

After that, no one explained the situation to him, so Namie eventually grew quieter and quieter. After all, the people in the palace no longer seemed to like him much. If he caused any unnecessary trouble, they’d surely dislike him even more. Even his uncle Masaran, who used to always care for him and play with him, was nowhere to be seen anymore.

It was during this quiet period that he met his great maternal grandfather.

“Your Highness, I am Landin, Chancellor of Brinwell. His Majesty summons you.”

Landin then led him to a bedroom filled with strange smoke. There, Namie met his great maternal grandfather, the King of Brinwell.

Though it wasn’t their first meeting, Masaran was the only member of the Brinwell royal family with whom he’d been close, so Namie tensed up immediately upon seeing the old man lying in bed. Unlike him, however, his great grandfather reached out his hand as if he’d known Namie for a very long time.
