Love Me Just Once (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 166
Biting back the impulse to immediately demand what on earth had happened, Idren examined her wound. Ophelia seemed deeply asleep—she didn’t stir even as he shone light upon her.
Judging by the mark’s size, it appeared to have been left by a man’s hand. Yet he couldn’t think of anyone bold enough to lay hands on Ophelia’s neck, fully aware they’d be caught by him.
Besides, this was a wound that hadn’t existed the day before.
As Idren recalled everyone Ophelia might have encountered that day, he realized one of them had been the prince of Egelbamot.
Could it be? Though the prince had professed his affection for her, would he really have laid a hand on her? Idren nearly refused to accept it—his own mind couldn’t fathom how anyone claiming to love a woman could physically harm her—but if it wasn’t Netepel Luntalis, then who else could have done such a thing?
In the end, Idren stayed awake the entire night. The thought of what the second prince had done to Ophelia kept sleep completely at bay. All he could do was suppress the urge to drag the man out right then and there and twist his neck.
Staring at the woman’s back all night, Idren resolved to ask her for the exact details as soon as dawn broke. He understood she might wish to conceal what had happened, but this time, he couldn’t let it go.
Yet when Ophelia actually rose, he found himself pretending to sleep without even realizing it.
He knew this contradicted his resolve, but Idren simply couldn’t bring himself to crush her wish—she’d checked whether he was still asleep before even the sun had fully risen.
Believing he was still asleep with his eyes closed, Ophelia quickly dressed herself. She wrapped even a fur cloak around her neck to hide the mark and quietly slipped out of the room. Knowing she wouldn’t look back, Idren held his breath and watched her retreating figure.
Deliberately timing his departure to match his usual waking hour, he went straight to find Ophelia first.
“You weren’t beside me when I woke this morning.”
“I woke early. Couldn’t sleep.”
“Still, sleeping so little isn’t good for you. Is there a reason you couldn’t sleep?”
Idren then waited for Ophelia to say something. Though he knew he hadn’t properly fulfilled his role as a husband, he still hoped, as her spouse, that she might confide in him about what she’d endured.
