“During my stay at the Preston estate, I never once saw the two of them engage in friendly conversation—not even while sharing a meal or having tea together. Rather than uncle and nephew, they seemed more like housemates merely living under the same roof.”

The courtroom fell silent, everyone holding their breath. A few among them stole glances toward Windsor, seated in the defendant’s chair.

Gallup, who initially spoke cautiously while watching Windsor’s reaction, gradually grew more confident. He declared boldly, as if he were a righteous crusader exposing a traitor to the nation. His resonant voice echoed across the courtroom.

“Lord Preston showed interest in nothing beyond Master Benjamin’s studies. Master Benjamin is only six years old—a child who desperately needs affection from his guardian. He had only recently lost his father and must have suffered deep emotional wounds. Yet Lord Preston, while never laying a hand on his nephew, essentially neglected him. I did my utmost for Master Benjamin, but there was a loneliness no tutor could ever fill.”

“I see.”

Parker nodded sympathetically, his expression filled with pity.

“So, if I understand correctly, Mr. Mayor is saying that Lord Preston failed to fulfill his duties as Master Benjamin’s guardian—that he was an unsuitable caretaker, caring only about his nephew’s academic performance and offering no emotional warmth whatsoever.”

“Precisely.”

Gallup nodded vigorously, and Parker gave a relaxed bow as if to signal that was enough.

“I commend Mr. Mayor for his noble courage in coming forward to testify against Lord Preston in this court. That concludes my examination.”

Roman, looking at Gallup in the witness stand, muttered under his breath, “That shameless bastard.” The judge glanced over his glasses at Evan.

“Will you cross-examine?”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

Evan rose from his seat and walked toward the witness stand. His footsteps rang out unusually loud in the hushed courtroom.

Gallup’s expression tensed once more. Recognizing it as wariness directed toward himself, Evan gave a bitter smile. No matter what he said, Gallup would refuse to agree.

After Being Cheated On, She Picked Up a Treasure (Female-dominant)

One-line summary: The husband I married on a whim had been secretly in love with me for a long time.

On the day when Jun Shao finally obtained the imperial decree for her marriage, Lan Qu, the person she had admired for six years, defied the decree and ran away.

Her gentleness and devotion, her promise of a lifetime together, were all disregarded by him. Instead, he dreamed of entering the palace to serve the Emperor’s sister as a sixth-rank attendant.

News of this incident spread throughout the capital, and the alleys in front of and behind the Lan mansion were crowded with people who came to watch the commotion.

Jun Shao should have been embarrassed and angry.

But someone stepped in to protect her dignity.

The figure was in a miserable state, yet still possessed an undeniable elegance and handsomeness.

The young lord struggled to climb the wall of the Lan mansion and shouted to her, “If he won’t marry you, I will!”

So, Jun Shao took advantage of the situation and married the person.

She thought the young lord did it to save the Lan family from the crime of defying the imperial decree, but never imagined that from beginning to end, what he coveted was her.

*

After the wedding, Jun Shao felt like she was living in a dream.

Her Wife-master was as beautiful as a fairy in a painting, skilled in the six arts, well-versed in poetry and literature, capable of being gentle and attentive, and also grand and dignified. Most importantly, she was the only one in his heart and eyes.

Jun Shao didn’t know how Lan Shiwu, as a illegitimate son without a father and blessed with beauty, had managed to preserve his purity, recklessly escape, and use his last ounce of strength to ruin his own reputation, all because of his love for her, just to stand before her.

She could only see him gazing at her with eyes full of love, and when she bestowed a name upon him, his eyes shone like stars.

“You have come to me like a weary bird perching on a branch. I shall call you A Qi.”
