Countess of Somerset, wrapped in a thick shawl, was just stepping out of the drawing room. Standing at the doorway, she gazed coldly at Jacqueline.

“Mother.”

Jacqueline’s eyebrows twitched slightly. Countess of Somerset tightened her shawl and assumed an even sterner expression.

“Go find Mr. O’Brien the moment you arrive in the capital. Do exactly as he tells you. Then we can make a comeback, Jackie. With that money, we can return to the capital. No one will dare say the Somerset family has fallen any longer.”

“I can’t lie just for money. My false testimony would bring misery to many people, Mother.”

“Misery?”

Countess of Somerset’s voice sharpened like an awl. She glared at her daughter with piercing eyes and ground her teeth.

Jacqueline’s eyes widened at her mother’s sudden change in demeanor.

“Mother….”

Mrs. Brown called out gently, “Sister,” as if urging her to stop, but Countess of Somerset didn’t hear. Her pale-blue eyes burned with fury.

“Are you telling me someone else matters more than I do? Can’t you see my unhappiness, Jackie? Can’t you see me dying slowly each day in this godforsaken countryside? After all I’ve done raising you, how can you treat me this way!”

Biting her lower lip firmly, Countess of Somerset suddenly softened her gaze. She whispered tenderly, as if coaxing a young child.

The shift was so abrupt it sent a chill down one’s spine.

“Jacqueline, you know very well who I live for. You know how much I trust and rely on you. Without you, I would have been dead long ago.”

“Of course, Mama.”
