She muttered to herself and then forced a bright expression as she turned to look at her mother.

“How has your health been lately?”

“Were you really curious about that?”

“Of course! I always think about you—don’t you know that?”

“A child like you hasn’t come to see me even once since leaving here—as if you’d been waiting for the chance to run away from me. I thought you’d forgotten me altogether.”

Her mother remained as cold as the north wind. Jacqueline’s eyes took on a gloomy cast.

“Mother…”

Her aunt lightly squeezed her hand and let go, as if urging her to understand.

Jacqueline nodded and once again forced a smile onto her lips. She whispered gently,

“Have you been taking your medicine regularly?”

“Medicine?”

Countess of Somerset’s voice instantly sharpened. She glared at her daughter with an irritable look.

“Medicine? If someone hears that, they’ll think I’m insane! I’m perfectly fine! I don’t need any medicine!”

Seeing her mother leap up like a dog whose tail had been stepped on, Jacqueline realized her mistake.

Her mother viewed taking sedatives as a shameful thing, fearing ridicule if others found out.
