Lord Preston's Secret Tutor (47 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 41
Windsor’s gaze slowly moved downward. Only then did he notice that she was clutching a crumpled letter. Her hand, pale as paper, trembled faintly.
Windsor’s eyes lifted again. They met hers. Her pupils wavered, as if tears might spill out at any moment.
No—transparent tears had already swelled atop her eyes, glistening. Yet she did not cry. She held her head high, clenched her jaw, and endured with quiet strength.
“…….”
Suddenly, he wondered—perhaps this was exactly how she had endured countless moments alone, when they’d called her “that penniless young lady.”
Precariously, like a tightly drawn bowstring at its limit.
A woman of her age, who should have just graduated from boarding school and debuted into society, had shouldered that burden alone.
She’d paid off debts incurred by her father’s failed business and cared for her mother, who suffered from nervous exhaustion. She’d ignored society’s prying attention and fended off swarms of reporters like horseflies.
Yet she’d never once shown how hard it was. Perhaps she’d simply grown used to enduring—or maybe she hadn’t even realized she’d become accustomed to it.
Abruptly, Windsor took a step toward her—then stopped and clenched his fist tightly.
At that moment, he despised himself for having provoked her into saying something about “a governess’s duty.” Self-loathing reared its head.
Windsor could not move any closer to her; like a stone statue, he stood rooted in place and merely nodded.
“Where did you say your mother is staying?”
“In Southfield.”
“I’ll prepare a carriage and look into the earliest train departure. Miss Somerset, please return to your room immediately and pack your things. I’ll let you know as soon as everything is ready.”
