Soon after following Edmund into the study, Rail took out a vibrating communication device and furrowed his brow. He glanced sideways at Edmund, who was heading straight for the desk.

“Tale has sent a telegram. He says everything you instructed, including Devon, has been completed. However…”

Edmund, seated before the desk, raised one eyebrow and lifted his gaze.

Rail swallowed once before opening his mouth.

“He’s asking how you intend to deal with Lady Etricia. It seems he’s concerned—ever since his own careless remark last time, Lady Lirien appears to have been hurt.”

As Rail asked this, he felt inwardly tense. At first, he too had watched Etricia with sharp vigilance.

After all, Etricia’s misdeeds had nearly killed him as well; there was no way he could view her kindly.

But learning about her tragic and tumultuous past, then witnessing how she defiantly stood up to her in-laws, had shifted his pity away from her and squarely onto those in-laws instead.

He wasn’t alone in this—his fellow servants felt the same. On the day Devon had trespassed, they’d dabbed their tears onto handkerchiefs, earnestly wishing for her happiness.

Yet their master was different.

He never showed mercy—not to enemies, nor even to allies who betrayed his trust. Though he occasionally revealed a humane side toward his own people, it was fleeting. He’d swiftly erect icy walls lined with thorns—so chilling even his allies felt uneasy.

Rail subtly turned his eyes to gauge his expressionless master’s mood.

Though his usual sharpness had softened somewhat, and he’d shown a subtle shift in demeanor just moments ago… still.

Just as Rail grew anxious over the absent reply and moistened his lips with his tongue—

“Tell him to withdraw the surveillance and switch to a protective detail.”
