I gave the coachman a slight nod. He closed the door and stepped back, and the carriage set off.

After the banquet, Edmund had become a duke, and a portal exclusive to his ducal house had been established—a commemorative gift bestowed by the Emperor on the day of the banquet.

Only the Imperial Family possessed an exclusive portal in the Empire, and across the entire world, it was exceedingly rare for a single noble house—let alone one not ruled by a monarch—to own such a thing. This alone revealed just how deeply he enjoyed the Emperor’s favor.

Lush forests and towering mountain ridges came into view—a rural village clearly far removed from the capital in terms of civilization.

A strange sense of disquiet overcame me. I pulled aside the curtain and rapped firmly on the partition to summon the coachman on the opposite side.
