3. Fabien’s Wish

As the head chef nervously paced the kitchen, gnawing his thumbnail, the sous-chef and junior servants likewise cast anxious glances toward the door.

Just then, the plate that had been sent to the dining room finally returned to the kitchen. Head Chef Fabien dashed over to inspect the tray and staggered back as if struck by lightning, his face frozen in shock.

“Again…!”

At his despairing cry—uttered like a death rattle—the sous-chef and servants realized today was no different from any other day and quietly returned to their stations.

To swiftly carry out Fabien’s inevitable outburst-turned-work-orders and get off duty, they moved with mechanical efficiency.

While the servants busily tidied the kitchen, Fabien trembled, clutching the plate. His eyes burned into the salad sitting untouched upon it. The salad remained exactly as it had been served, undisturbed by even a single forkful, stabbing deep into his heart.

“How… how could he possibly know?”

How could he have known carrots were hidden inside!

He’d minced not only cabbage and various other vegetables but even added finely diced beets to mask the color. Not satisfied with that, he’d developed a special sauce to completely conceal the scent and lavishly drizzled it over everything, confident he’d hidden the carrots perfectly.

‘I truly believed this time he wouldn’t be able to avoid eating it…’

Biting down hard on his lower lip after his 6,377th failure, Fabien felt dizzy with a defeat he still couldn’t grow accustomed to. Leaning heavily on the counter, he bowed his head.

It had already been over ten years since he entered the royal palace. Throughout that considerable time, Fabien had cherished only one wish.

To witness His Highness Kahilrn eating carrots!

Yet again, his simple hope met with disappointment.
