The words “Is there even any reputation left for our family to lose?” rose to my throat, but I tilted my teacup instead. The countess dabbed her eyes with a handkerchief and continued.

“Still, you can’t possibly marry off your only younger sister to just anyone, can you? Look—your sister is so worried about marriage that she’s grown this haggard.”

The countess thrust Elia’s face forward as if to prove her point. But contrary to her words, Elia’s cheeks had plumped up since a few days ago, and when I frowned at her unconvincing expression, the countess hurriedly offered an excuse.

“She’s been crying nonstop for days, so her face is a bit swollen… Anyway, wouldn’t it benefit you if Elia married into a good family? With the rivalry between the two princes about to erupt, wouldn’t it be better to have even one more ally on your side?”

Count Violet, entangled in a fraud case due to Floria’s scheming, had only recently been released from prison. I’d expected the countess and Elia—banished from the palace because of him—to come calling soon, but not this quickly.

I took a sip of tea and glanced briefly at the two seated before me. Next to the countess, who was dabbing away tears with her handkerchief, Elia gazed at me with a pitiful expression.

‘I knew it, but they’re even more shameless than I thought.’

Kahilrn’s standing among the nobles had taken a hit because of the count’s affair—yet here they were, making such demands. Of course, Count Violet had fallen into Floria’s cunning trap, but his business proposal had been shoddy to begin with.

The nobles had probably invested partly because he was the father-in-law of the First Prince. Though, naturally, they hadn’t trusted me enough to commit large sums.

“Elia is already twenty-one. It’s far too late already. If we delay any longer, she might end up as a second wife somewhere.”

“That’s absolutely unacceptable!”

Elia hastily slid off her chair and clung to my knees.

“How could the only younger sister of the future queen possibly become a second wife in some obscure family? Wouldn’t that tarnish your dignity too, sister?”

“Isn’t this something you could easily handle, Reneola? Just ask His Highness the First Prince to arrange a match. Hmm? And how about taking Elia back as your handmaiden? It seems you still haven’t secured a proper maid and are relying on housemaids—hardly befitting your status. Floria employs four maids, after all.”
