To say it’s heavy right to my face—what insolence.

‘Come to think of it, who is this man?’

Where did he suddenly pop out from?

I glared at the man whose good looks were halved by his ill-fated words and actions. Noble or not, this was still a noble household, and the surrounding fence was quite high, maintaining at least a semblance of decorum.

“Who are you? How did you get in here?”

He didn’t seem like a local.

Though not dressed extravagantly, the aura enveloping him and his refined demeanor clearly marked him as nobility—high-ranking nobility, at that. He was utterly out of place in this rural estate. Of course, even for a noble, barging into another family’s home without permission was a breach of etiquette.

‘Then again, he doesn’t seem like the type who cares about manners.’

At my question, the man folded his arms and raised an eyebrow, drawn as if painted with a long, elegant stroke.

“Shouldn’t you thank me first for helping you?”

He tilted his head slightly and looked down at me. Arrogant as he appeared—and thoroughly irritating—he had likely saved me from serious injury. It was fortunate that only my backside ached and nothing worse.

Though I’d just lectured him about manners, I couldn’t very well snap back rudely, so I quickly stood up, brushed the dirt off my dress, and bowed my head.

“Thanks to you, I’m unharmed. Thank you.”

Though it would’ve been even better if he hadn’t thrown me. I swallowed the retort that rose to my lips. In this world, a modest reply like mine should have been met with courtesy—but strangely, he stayed silent. I glanced up and saw him looking elsewhere. As I’d suspected, he’d clearly sold whatever manners he once had.

“Trying to run away?”

His calm question nearly made my heart leap out of my mouth. Only then did I remember—other people, not family, were staying in this house. Cinderella’s servants!

This man must be one of them. That explained his rude attitude. To him, my elder sister—the one who’d tormented his master for life—would hardly seem endearing. Still…

‘Could it be I’ve been caught before I even properly tried to escape?’

Blinking in shock, I met his gaze as he gave a slight nod of his chin.

“Pick that up.”

I turned toward where his chin pointed. A suitcase I hadn’t noticed lay wide open, spilling its contents everywhere. It must have sprung open from the impact of hitting the ground. Just as I’d been debating whether to flee without looking back, this happened—perfect timing for disaster.

Since I was clearly caught red-handed, I rolled my eyes instead of my head and decided to brazen it out.

“I accidentally dropped it out the window.”

“You dropped something that heavy by accident?”

“The wardrobe’s near the window.”

“So you came down to pick it up?”

“Yes, exactly.”

The man gave a short laugh.

“Through the window?”

“It’s late. I was worried my family might wake up.”

“Climbing down that flimsy thing, then.”

“I’ve often hung from it since I was little.”

I knew it sounded unbelievable—but when you insist hard enough, what can anyone do? I held his probing gaze without flinching.

My neck prickled, but I absolutely couldn’t look away. Besides, it wasn’t such a huge lie.

His violet eyes—delicate yet faintly savage—locked onto me persistently. Afraid I’d be entranced by that gaze, I widened my eyes even more.

“Then pick it up and go back inside.”

He stroked his smooth chin with long fingers and nodded. Only then did I silently sigh inwardly and relax my eyes.

“Yes, I should.”

I quickly turned and began gathering the spilled belongings. The prickling sensation on the back of my neck told me he was still standing there, watching me.

It was too late to run now—I’d have to try again later, once night deepened further. As I swept up my disheveled dress, a large hand suddenly appeared before me.

“Take it.”

“Thank you.”

I snatched the familiar bread bag from his hand and stuffed it into the suitcase. Immediately, he picked up another bread bag beside him and held it out.

“You packed quite thoroughly.”

His urging gesture made it clear—he was teasing me.

“I eat more than I look like I do.”

Grumpily replying, I swiftly swept the rest of my things into the suitcase.

“Thank you for your help.”

Lingering would only make things worse. Without hesitation, I turned to leave, but he called out from behind.

“Planning to go back in through the door?”

Where else would I go? I turned back, giving him a look that said, “Is that even a question?” He merely curled the corner of his mouth.

“You were worried about waking your family, weren’t you?”

“…”

It took real talent for such a handsome face to look this infuriating. His cold, refined features paired oddly well with his shameless attitude, making him all the more annoying.

“I don’t happen to know how to levitate. What else can I do?”

I grinned, pointing to the short blanket-rope dangling from the first-floor wall, then walked straight back inside without looking back.

What good is being handsome if you’ve got such rotten luck? Shaking my head, I crept carefully upstairs, wary of waking anyone. After reorganizing the haphazardly packed suitcase and lengthening the blanket rope, quite some time had passed.

“They should be gone by now, right?”

Peeking cautiously out the window to check, I nearly screamed. The man I’d assumed had long since left was staring directly up at me. When our eyes met, he stretched his lips into a slow smile.

I quickly crouched down to hide, and heard a short chuckle.

‘I thought my heart would drop out. What’s with this guy?’

Is he watching me in case I try to run again? There’s no one even around—couldn’t he slack off a little?

“Damn it. Unnecessarily loyal.”

I flopped onto the bed with a heavy sigh. Since our eyes had met, he’d likely stay put for a while. I’d just have to wait and try escaping again at dawn.

—or so I’d thought, yet here I sat quietly in a carriage heading toward the capital. I’d attempted escape several times since then, checking carefully each time—but every single attempt ended with our eyes meeting.

‘Eventually, he even took a spot right by my window.’

How terrified I’d been, seeing him reclining against a tree branch, staring right at me. His smirking “Aren’t you going to sleep?” had been infuriating beyond words.

‘Why is he so damn persistent!’

In the end, I’d spent the entire night wide awake and was now helplessly boarding the carriage under my family’s farewell.

As the Countess held my hand, urging me to ask Floria for living expenses once we reached the capital, I turned to look for the man who’d tormented me all night—but he was nowhere among the servants.

‘Guess he’s off catching some sleep somewhere, after not sleeping a wink all night.’

Thinking back now, no matter the reason for surveillance, it was still outrageously rude to stand so stubbornly right in front of a lady’s bedroom window. If I ever met that man again, I resolved to give him a piece of my mind about his appalling manners.

But throughout the entire journey to the capital, I never saw him again.

[This is the timeline separator]

Lehose, the capital of the Hillik Kingdom, was a planned city where classical elegance met refined architecture. Famous even among foreigners for its beauty, it drew tourists from afar—but right now, none of its splendid streets registered in my eyes.

‘So this is the lion’s den I’m entering.’

With mixed feelings, I watched the bridge connecting the royal palace and the capital descend over the moat. All the way here, I’d desperately hoped the carriage would arrive even a little late—but it had been cruelly swift.

I hadn’t exactly stopped trying to escape along the way. But the servants were infuriatingly sharp-eyed and just as pointlessly loyal as that man. With no opening whatsoever, I’d inevitably ended up walking down the corridor of the Second Prince’s Palace, where Cinderella resided.

I’d spent the whole trip wondering why she’d summoned me to the palace—so unlike the original story—but no answer came. At this point, diverged as it was from the original plot, there was nothing I could predict. I could only hope it wouldn’t turn into the worst-case scenario.

‘Damn it.’

Standing before the reception room where Cinderella waited, I suddenly remembered that man. In a way, it was because of him that I stood here now. Recalling his annoying smirk—the one he’d flash every time I peeked out my window, lounging on that tree branch—I unconsciously clenched my fists.

‘Just you wait till I see you again.’

If Cinderella kills me, I’ll come back as a ghost and curse you!

Having ground my teeth at him the entire carriage ride to the capital, I took a deep breath to calm myself. Right now, I needed to worry about how to deal with Floria inside.

‘Surely she won’t have pigeons attack me the moment I step through the door?’

Though I told myself that couldn’t happen since she’d gone to the trouble of summoning me, my anxiety refused to settle.

‘Should I just drop to my knees the second I enter? At least then she won’t gouge my eyes out.’

In that brief moment, countless scenarios of meeting Floria flashed through my mind.

The fact that not a single one was positive only deepened my unease. Oblivious to my inner turmoil, the servant opened the door without hesitation as soon as permission came from inside.

Bathed in sunlight pouring through tall windows, Cinderella slowly turned toward me.
