After finishing the meal, we warmed ourselves by the campfire.
I huddled against the cool mountain air. Unable to lie down, I held in my hand a faded candy I’d found in my dress pocket.
I wanted to give the candy to Liam, but hesitated over how to start the conversation.
He hadn’t rested since the day before, having pushed through a forced march that even crossed a border. Though we’d eaten dinner, the portion hadn’t been enough.
‘He must be exhausted. I’d like to give him this candy.’
I hesitated—and then fell asleep right there.
I woke up chilled to the bone. As I sat up, leaves that had covered me fell to the ground.
I was alone in the cave.
“Liam?”
Someone must have added wood—the campfire burned fiercely.
