“Damn it,” Leber muttered, roughly wiping away the tears gathering at the corners of his eyes with the back of his hand as he sat down.

“It wasn’t that I believed Debois.”

Leber blamed Debois—the very person responsible for his departure from Bedroka.

Debois, his friend, his first love, and the object of his unrequited affection.

“My fate’s my own damn fault.”

Lying flat on his back and staring up at the barracks ceiling, tears once again welled in Leber’s eyes.

No matter how he thought about it, going to Titris would bring him nothing good.

I should turn back, even now.
