“As you well know, the one who ordered me to carry out this task was His Majesty himself. Now, stop resisting and let’s begin the interrogation. Next—did you sleep with that Titris bastard? Well? Was it enjoyable?”

Elise gasped sharply and pressed her hands against the floor.

“Answer me! I’ve heard barbarians are exceptional in bed. Were you so enchanted by their prowess that you betrayed state secrets?”

Elise clenched her fists. Her nails scraped against the floor, producing an unpleasant grating sound.

“I never did such a thing.”

“Don’t lie! We found letters from the Prince of Titris in your room—written in the most passionate, desperate tone.”

Gabriel tossed a bundle of letters onto the floor before Elise. She swallowed hard and unfolded one.

The handwriting was unfamiliar, and judging solely by the contents, their suspicions seemed justified.

Yet these were letters Elise had never received.

Still, she knew exactly who favored this pink stationery.

‘Iris… Did Iris orchestrate this?’

Elise bit down hard on her lip until it split open, blood seeping out.

“Let’s make this quick—we’re both busy. Charges: conspiracy in the late king’s assassination and collusion with the Prince of Titris. Just nod your head. I’ll draft the confession myself.”

Gabriel tapped Elise’s foot lightly.

“Please let me see His Majesty. I’ll explain everything to him personally.”

“You really don’t understand, do you? Fine. I’ll have to drill it into your ears until you do.”

Gabriel rolled up his sleeves. Then came the beating.

[This is the timeline separator]

Gabriel thoroughly trampled Elise before leaving. He lifted her limp hand and forced her to press her fingerprint onto the confession he’d written himself.

Elise regained consciousness half a day after Gabriel had departed.

Every part of her body throbbed painfully. Her ankle wouldn’t move properly—it must have been broken.

She forced her unresponsive limbs together and curled into a tight ball.

“Hnngh…”

Tears streamed endlessly down her face. Elise leaned her head back against the wall and wept silently.

She felt utterly wronged—and furious.

The accusations of involvement in the late king’s murder and collusion with the Prince of Titris were fabrications.

She’d only exchanged a few words with Karan, the Prince of Titris, regarding the hunt for the dread dragon Ragnaros.

But who would believe her now?

The punishment awaiting Elise was obvious.

At best, exile; at worst, public execution.

“This is all a misunderstanding. If I explain properly, it’ll be fine. It’ll be okay.”

After all, chaotic incidents like this often happened right before a wedding.

Elise tried desperately to stay optimistic.

“His Majesty imprisoned me only because he’s angry right now. He’ll come back for me soon.”

She repeated the words like a mantra.

Chase would come for her. The misunderstanding would clear, and in a week’s time, she’d walk down the aisle beside him, veiled in white.

And just as she’d hoped, Chase arrived late that night—but he wasn’t alone.

[This is the timeline separator]

“How repulsive.”

Chase wrinkled his nose the moment he stepped into the dungeon.

“Must I really go down there to hear her out? She’s as good as dead anyway.”

Elise was a card that needed discarding—she’d become a blemish on his hard-won throne.

“Your Majesty is so merciful.”

At that moment, a delicate hand rested upon his forearm. A fair, slender hand gently stroked Chase’s arm.

“Isn’t the poor girl pitiful? At least grant her a proper farewell.”

Iris—her gentle smile melted Chase’s heart instantly.

Her very name evoked blossoms; she was hailed as the kingdom’s treasure, the pride of the Ivory Tower, and the Rose of Bedroka.

And she was the only woman in Bedroka who ever made Chase truly desperate.

He’d once sought her hand in marriage by sending a proposal to House Warton—but instead, he’d ended up with Elise.

For a while, Chase had been content with Elise. Though he found her flaws disappointing, he’d had no alternative.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

‘If only Iris hadn’t made up her mind back then…’

But Iris had acted boldly—and claimed her place by his side.

Chase frowned whenever he imagined a future without her.

“Does merely thinking of Elise disgust you so much? She always drags one’s mood to the very depths. I’m endlessly amazed by Your Majesty’s patience.”

Iris feigned empathy, misreading his feelings—but Chase nodded anyway.

A minor misunderstanding from a woman who’d even killed her own husband, Prince David, just to reach him—what did it matter?

‘Unlike Elise, who insisted David could never be killed…’

Iris had spilled a single drop of black ink onto an otherwise pristine life—for his sake.

Thus, he owed it to her to remove anything that might darken her future.

“It’s I who should be moved by your kindness—considering I’m the husband of your sister who dragged you down to this lowly place.”

Chase’s voice faltered, overwhelmed with emotion. Iris pressed her chest tightly against his arm.

“Do you love me? It’s always been you. If only my father hadn’t opposed us… I was so worried I’d arrived too late.”

Chase’s lips softened into a tender smile. At last, he had everything: the title of Grand Inquisitor, the throne, and Bedroka’s most beautiful woman.

Though the Ragnaros hunt worried him, Iris had promised active support—so there was nothing to fear.

Elise had already prepared all the troops, funds, and plans.

‘All I need to do is carry them out as they are.’

Once he claimed the title of Hero, the entire continent—including Bedroka—would kneel before him.

Chase’s chest swelled with anticipation.

Chase and Iris descended into the dungeon.

As they neared the cell, sobbing grew clearer.

A dull ache pressed against his chest, but Chase dismissed it as the stale dungeon air.

“Elise.”

At Chase’s call, Elise barely managed to lift her body from the floor.

“Ah! Chase! Your Majesty!”

Elise scrambled on her knees toward the iron bars. Seeing her disheveled face, Chase clicked his tongue in distaste.

“Your Majesty, I knew you’d—”

Her joyful greeting died the moment she saw Iris standing beside him. Elise clenched her jaw tightly.

Instead of shouting why Iris had come, she spoke the words she’d prepared.

“Your Majesty, I have never betrayed you.”

Her trembling voice sounded pitiful, but it was the truth—and it had to be said.

“Shut that mouth of yours. All that comes out is lies. Did you really conspire so shamelessly with that filthy barbarian?”

“Your Majesty, I never privately colluded with the Prince of Titris.”

“Still brazenly lying? You’ve got some nerve.”

Chase glared at her coldly.

“If you give me time, I’ll uncover everything myself. I’ll prove it all—”

“What? Planning to fabricate evidence once you’re out? Isn’t that what you do best? Spreading false rumors through agents and planting fake proof to steal what belongs to others.”

Elise’s words caught in her throat.

Chase was right. Some of the things she’d done for him had been exactly that.

But she’d done them all for his sake.

Yet now, he condemned those very acts as grave crimes—while enjoying the sweet fruits they’d yielded.

Tears streamed down the corners of Elise’s eyes.

Huh… huh… It felt as if the dungeon’s air was thinning. Hyperventilation made her head spin.

She wiped her tears with her bruised, swollen hand.

Her life was too tragic to end like this.

“Please… please spare me, Your Majesty.”

Elise prostrated herself on the floor, pressing her forehead against the cold stone in a humiliating plea.

It was the only thing she could do—now that she’d realized Chase’s heart had completely turned away.

She wasn’t foolish enough to cling to his love or beg for affection from this changed man.

Instead of appealing to his emotions, she appealed to his reason.

“Your Majesty, I’ve built numerous enterprises. My disappearance would cause massive chaos in those ventures and severely impact the upcoming campaign. Let me manage affairs until the campaign ends. After that, I’ll vanish from your sight and live quietly. Please… show me mercy.”

“Elise, don’t worry—I’ll take good care of all your businesses.”

Iris cut her off mid-sentence.

“Elise, accept it. There’s nothing more you can do. You have no place left.”

Elise lifted her head and met Iris’s gaze. Iris smiled brightly.

“You always belonged right here, didn’t you?”

Iris gestured toward the dungeon floor. Fury surged through Elise, boiling over in an instant. Trembling violently, she stared as Iris leaned closer.

“The dungeon suits you perfectly.”

“You… You’re the one who did this to me.”

“Only realizing that now? I’ve been giving you hints all along.”

Elise squeezed her eyes shut. Suddenly, all the rumors she’d deliberately ignored came flooding back.

Whispers of frequent meetings between Chase and Iris, news that Iris had begun managing the palace maids and chambermaids, people claiming they’d secured business rights through her.

She’d asked Chase about it—but each time, he’d grown more distant, leaving her no choice but to stay silent.

The time she’d spent covering her eyes, plugging her ears, and sealing her lips now pierced her like daggers.

“Could you give us a moment alone, Chase?”

Iris rubbed her cheek against Chase’s chest as she spoke.

“Will you be alright?”

Chase asked tenderly. His smile, fixed on Iris, brimmed with affection.

“Of course, Your Majesty. You know Elise can’t do anything—she can’t even use magic. Even if she could, she wouldn’t dare lay a finger on me.”

“But her mouth still works. I worry she might say something hurtful to you.”

Chase stroked Iris’s cheek. She nestled into his large palm like a cat, rubbing her head against it.

Their tender display seared painfully into Elise’s retinas.

Only after kissing Iris’s forehead did Chase finally leave—without a shred of consideration for his former lover.

Elise glared at Iris.

“Since when?”

“Does it matter?”

Elise lunged toward the woman who asked so innocently.

But the iron bars stopped her short—her fingers couldn’t even brush Iris’s dress hem.

Would it have been different if she could use magic? Elise ground her teeth in despair.

Iris smirked and sat down on the floor. With her white hand, she gently caressed Elise’s cheek.

“Everything’s simply returning to its rightful place. Don’t resent me—it’s your own greed that brought you here.”

“Why are you doing this to me?”

Elise’s voice cracked.

“Because you’re a nuisance. No grand reason.”

Iris spoke with the casual air of someone sweeping away trash. Then she grasped Elise’s fallen hand.

Into Elise’s palm, Iris placed a small vial.

Odorless, tasteless—pure poison.

“I made it myself. It works beautifully. I’ve already tested it, so don’t worry about its effectiveness.”

Elise’s pupils flickered rapidly. Could it be…?
