I'll Be the Queen of the Enemy Country (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 15
Viscountess Vailni, standing beside him, quickly supported him.
“You’ve disgraced the family name. Immediately act as if nothing happened and go kneel before His Highness Chase.”
Vailni’s greed—still trying to push forward the engagement with Chase despite how things had turned—was utterly repulsive.
“I’ve already sent word to His Highness Chase that the engagement is to be considered null and void. The fault lies with me, so I’ll ensure His Highness suffers no harm…”
Elise couldn’t finish her sentence.
Crack! Along with the sharp sound, Elise’s head snapped sideways.
She’d been slapped—by Fraser.
Clutching her stinging cheek, Elise glared at Fraser.
His agitated shouting reached her ears, but the words weren’t clear.
‘He hit me with all his strength.’
Her muffled hearing slowly returned.
“…You’ve made the House of Viscount Warton a complete laughingstock. Go kneel before His Highness immediately. I’ll make sure it’s as if nothing ever happened.”
“How can something that happened be undone? That would be deceiving His Highness Chase. Isn’t that an even greater sin?”
Fraser let out an exasperated breath, utterly baffled by Elise’s defiant attitude.
In just a few days, Elise had become a completely different person.
The girl who used to flinch and lower her head at the mere sound of his voice now stared straight into his eyes without hesitation, talking back.
“You think I’m a joke, don’t you? Everyone, leave us.”
Sparks flew from Fraser’s eyes.
Being left alone with Elise clearly meant he intended to vent his anger freely.
“Father, please don’t scold her too harshly. She’s just still immature.”
Iris seized the moment to interject.
Pretending to worry about Elise and acting as if she cared, Iris began playing the role of the kind elder sister.
“I’ll try to reason with her properly.”
“Iris, my good daughter. Remember, beasts aren’t tamed with gentle words. They must be taught through discipline.”
“Father, Elise is human.”
“Oh, my sweet daughter. Your eyes are treasures—that’s why you see her that way. You only wish to see her in a good light… Go on upstairs now. I’ll try reasoning with her as you suggested.”
The conversation between Fraser and Iris made Elise sick.
Pretending to be a good father, pretending to be a kind daughter.
Vailni escorted Iris upstairs, and the servants vanished as well. Only Elise and Fraser remained in the spacious hall.
“So you’ve grown arrogant just because things went smoothly with His Highness Chase.”
Fraser took a step closer. Elise pressed her feet firmly into the floor to keep from stepping back.
‘I’ve done nothing wrong. So I don’t need to retreat.’
She refused to show him any weakness.
Fraser raised his hand again.
Slap! The pain, as if her skin were tearing, forced Elise to collapse onto her knees.
“Do as I say while I’m still speaking nicely. Tell His Highness Chase you sent that letter out of fear and that it was all lies.”
“No. I won’t do that.”
Fraser wouldn’t dare kill her.
And he couldn’t hit her again either—because the royal banquet was soon to be held.
For Fraser’s plans with Chase to succeed, Elise absolutely had to attend that banquet.
Thus, the slap he’d just delivered was the harshest punishment Fraser could possibly inflict.
Elise had calculated even that before provoking the incident.
Still kneeling, Elise shot Fraser a sharp glare.
Fraser snorted in disbelief, then sat down in front of her and grabbed a fistful of her hair.
Elise’s head jerked sharply backward.
“Listen carefully, Elise. Without marrying His Highness Chase, you have no reason to exist. Do you think we’d keep someone worthless like you in our household? You’ll be cast out of the viscount’s house in disgrace. And then what will become of your life? Shall I spell it out for you? How your mother died?”
Elise bit hard on the inside of her lip. Tears quickly welled up in the corners of her eyes.
Seeing Elise’s tears greatly improved Fraser’s mood.
She shouldn’t have been so insolent. She clearly needed a good beating.
Fraser shoved her head away as if discarding something. Elise swayed and fell over.

Fraser shook his hands dismissively and clicked his tongue.
“Stay locked in your room. Don’t even think about going anywhere for now. Everyone heard that? Keep a close watch!”
Footsteps hurried away noisily.
Elise’s shoulders trembled as she lay face-down.
“Stop sniveling here and get back to your room immediately. You’re bringing bad luck.”
Even after Fraser’s words, Elise couldn’t get up right away—if she stood now, he’d surely see her smile.
[This is the timeline separator]Elise had to bite her lower lip tightly all the way back to her room—so hard it drew blood.
Only after she entered her room and shut the door firmly did she finally release her lip.
Pfft.
A soft laugh escaped from her lips.
She was simply delighted that Fraser had acted exactly as she’d anticipated.
Now, Iris’s plan was ruined as well.
‘She must have wanted to meet Prince David at the hunting grounds, but that won’t happen now.’
Even if Chase was already out of the king’s favor, it wouldn’t look good for his older brother David to be seen enjoying leisure while embroiled in scandal.
‘His Majesty will surely impose stricter measures. I wonder how he’ll resolve this situation.’
Elise fervently prayed that the king would be furious.
[This is the timeline separator]“Cut out the article and keep it as a clipping.”
Hartvin, taking the AlliCat Times handed to him by Karan, tilted his head in confusion.
“But it’s not exactly favorable content.”
“It’s an honor. This officially confirms the relationship between Elise and me.”
“But it’s a scandal…”
“What does that matter? What’s important is that both my name and Elise’s appear side by side.”
Sometimes Hartvin couldn’t understand Karan. The man, usually so rational and composed, completely lost his composure whenever Elise was involved.
Still, since it caused him no harm, Hartvin simply watched and waited.
“How about framing it for display?”
Partly because he found Karan amusing, Hartvin even egged him on.
“Fine. Buy a few more copies.”
Karan said this and gathered his outer coat.
“Where are you headed? Should I come along?”
“You stay and handle the work. Haven’t you finished wrapping up the Bedroka business withdrawal yet?”
Karan had canceled all the projects Bedroka had been preparing.
Without Elise, Bedroka meant absolutely nothing to him.
‘It’s a place I’ll destroy someday anyway—why leave behind things I’ve personally invested effort in?’
Karan glanced briefly out the window at Bedroka Street before stepping outside.
His destination was a small park famous for its promenade.
Watching Bedroka nobles stroll leisurely by the lakeside under parasols left a bitter taste in Karan’s mouth.
‘How carefree they are.’
The pleasures of Bedroka citizens were luxuries forbidden to the people of Titris.
Though it might seem like ugly jealousy or inferiority, if one traced back to the ancient past when Ragnaros was put to sleep, Karan’s resentment held some justification.
‘The Bedroka royal family are frauds.’
Karan’s gaze grew increasingly sharp.
“Your Highness? You’re here early.”
The moment he heard Elise’s voice, Karan’s demeanor changed.
His eyes still held their usual upward slant, but his gaze softened.
“Elise, come here quickly… What is this?”
But the gentleness didn’t last. Karan lifted Elise’s chin, his eyes lingering long on her swollen cheek.
“It’s nothing.”
Elise forcibly pulled Karan’s hand away.

Fury surged within Karan. Her fair, delicate face was puffed up, bruised a deep blue like paint spilled on rice paper—and she called it ‘nothing’?
“Is this something you’re used to? Or do you want me to ignore it? Or perhaps you enjoy pain?”
Anger made Karan lash out sarcastically.
“It’s precisely so I won’t get used to it. I don’t want you to worry. As for pain… how much I can endure depends on what I gain in return. I don’t enjoy it.”
Had Elise decided to deliberately provoke him? She answered without even a flicker of emotion.
“Who did this to you? Was it because of the article?”
Karan felt ashamed of himself for having been so pleased upon reading the article.
He hadn’t fully grasped the situation Elise now had to bear and take responsibility for.
Karan clenched his fists tightly.
“Your Highness, it’ll heal soon. If you keep acting like this, I’ll regret coming out today.”
In truth, Elise had planned to refuse when Karan first contacted her to meet—it hadn’t been easy sneaking out secretly.
But she absolutely needed to see him to ensure the scandal didn’t simply fade away.
And she hadn’t expected Karan to react so sensitively to her injury.
Chase had often just accepted it when Elise was struck by Fraser.
“All you need is some ointment.”
That had been the entirety of Chase’s reaction.
Back then, she’d thought Chase was suppressing his frustration to stay in good standing with her family, the House of Viscount Warton.
‘But it wasn’t that at all. He simply didn’t care about my injuries.’
Whether she got hurt or not.
She’d assumed most men were like Chase—but seeing Karan proved otherwise.
His anger was visible to Elise—his eye muscles twitching, his jaw clenched tight.
“Let’s walk.”
Elise tugged Karan’s arm.
Walking together amicably would stir more gossip than standing confrontationally.
Karan, unable to bear looking at Elise’s face any longer, abruptly turned his body.
He started walking ahead, and Elise quickly followed.
“Your Highness…”
“I just need some time to sort out my thoughts.”
Karan cut off Elise’s words, yet slowed his pace slightly to make it easier for her to keep up.
It was a fine day, with pleasant sunshine and breeze. The lakeside was crowded—some had already launched boats for leisurely rides.
A few people recognized Karan and Elise and began pointing.
Karan swiftly noticed and sharply lifted his eyes.
Those who met his gaze flinched and quickly looked away, though the murmuring didn’t subside.
“This will keep happening. In Bedroka, that is.”
Elise lightly grasped Karan’s arm. Despite the faint pressure, Karan obediently stopped.
“There’s nothing we can do about it for now. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to get used to it. Does it bother you?”
It wasn’t the scandal that bothered him. His anger stemmed solely from Elise’s bruised face.
“What exactly should I get used to? Tell me clearly—what things must I grow accustomed to while living with you?”
Karan’s voice was unusually stiff.
“Insults? Criticism? Or perhaps a wife who gets beaten regularly?”

She said to him: “Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change it!”

Liu Changning transmigrated into a female cannon fodder character in a female-dominant novel.
After reading the first half of the novel’s plot, the first thing she did upon transmigration was to divorce the Pan Jinlian-style male protagonist she had just married.
She indulged herself, pretending to be ugly and poor.
But as time passed, the way that man looked at her became more and more unusual…
Liu Changning was dumbfounded: Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change!

This lifetime, Pei Yuanshao was rejected by the same woman twice!
The first time, she drove him away. Forced by the situation, he endured the waves of anger in his heart, yielding and humbling himself.
That person lay slanted on a rocking chair, her sallow face emotionless: “If you don’t want a divorce, go cook!”
Pei Yuanshao’s face was dark and gloomy: “You!”
The second time, after the crisis in Jinling City was resolved, the new emperor sent someone to pick him up. He turned around, stammering: “I… I have to go. If you keep me…”
That person lay on the kang bed, her back to him, as if she had long anticipated this day, crisp and clear: “Goodbye!”
Pei Yuanshao was so angry his fingers trembled: “You… you!”
The mission of family and country made him restrain himself, averting his eyes and turning to leave this broken household.
Two years later, they met again. Seeing her ethereal face, his body shook like a sieve.
“She was originally a ‘she’!”
At the Qionglin Banquet, the top scholar of the imperial examination, a talented person with exceptional speech and conduct, all the unmarried young gentlemen from aristocratic families looked at her with shy and timid eyes.
The peerless imperial official Pei Yuanshao felt the anger in his heart erupt. He pointed at the woman surrounded by the crowd at the Qionglin Banquet, his thin lips slightly curled: “Little sister, I wants that person to be the wife-master of my Mingde Prince Manor.”
