I'll Be the Queen of the Enemy Country (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 1
#Prologue
“Will you break up with me?”
Karan tilted his head to the left. He stared intently at Elise seated across from him.
A noble of Bedroka was asking a Titris—known as barbarians—for a night together.
“Why?”
“As I mentioned earlier, it will be helpful.”
“For me or for you?”
“For both of us.”
Karan exhaled a long, slow breath. His chest rose and fell deeply.
She was a woman of intoxicating allure—merely looking at her made his mouth go dry.
Yet Karan hesitated. Precisely because it was Elise.
“Are you serious? Unlike in Titris, purity is highly valued in Bedroka.”
“Do you want me to say I won’t take responsibility?”
Her eyes, lifted defiantly toward him, were provocative. Karan’s throat went dry. To hide his nervousness, he swept back his hair, which had grown long enough to fall into his eyes.
“I’m saying I will take responsibility. But first.”
Karan took Elise’s hand resting on the table.
He forcibly opened her clenched fist. Karan slid his fingers between hers—slender, unblemished, and impossibly small compared to his own.
That delicate hand clearly revealed a life of ease, unlike Karan’s own.
It trembled faintly.
‘She’s nervous.’
That trembling shook Karan. Slowly, he stroked her palm.
If you’re truly sincere, perhaps I’ll pretend not to notice and hold on.
Karan had no intention of telling her he stood in a furnace.
Like a perfectly ripe fruit exuding a luscious scent, he lifted Elise’s hand.
Elise’s gaze followed his movement.
Without losing her eyes, Karan pressed his lips to the inside of her wrist, where her pulse beat.
“Ah….”
Elise’s full, luscious lips parted like a blooming flower.
“It won’t be a peaceful night.”
The spot his lips touched burned as if scalded.
He accepted Elise’s proposal. Elise’s heart pounded.
She undid Karan’s shirt. Beneath it appeared broad, powerful shoulders—unlike anything expected from a noble who supposedly handled only pens.
His raven-black hair and obsidian-dark eyes, rare in Veronika, held an air of mystery.
His sharp eyes gleamed with intelligence, and the gentle smile on his lips inspired trust.
He truly was a handsome man, even upon second glance. Elise recalled their first meeting at a ball.
The memory was astonishingly vivid.
‘Even back then, I thought he was handsome. Others called him rough, though.’
While Elise was lost in thought, soft bedding touched her lower back.
Somehow, she was already on the bed.
“Don’t regret it—it’s already too late.”
She had made her decision the moment she resolved to meet Karan, regardless of what he said.
Now, she neither regretted nor wished to turn back.
Strangely, she felt calm. Yet, separately from that calmness, her body steadily grew warmer.
Instead of answering, Elise tugged at Karan’s loosened shirt collar.
#1. The Woman Who Made a King
“Are you ready, Viscount Warton?”
Elise Warton.
Once deemed the blemish of the viscountcy, an enigma of the magical world, and the filth of high society, she had now prepared herself for the noblest position.
In the mirror stood a woman with alluringly upturned eyes, emerald-green irises, and delicate, graceful features.
“You look even more beautiful than usual today.”
Trending
Regina, Elise’s maid, said this while brushing her golden hair.
Elise lifted the corners of her lips.
Even to her own eyes, the reflection pleased her immensely.
“Could it be that His Majesty will finally propose today? What do you think he’s prepared?”
Overwhelmed with emotion, Elise’s eyes trembled slightly.
“Regina, compose yourself.”
Elise herself was eager, but instead of getting carried away, she calmed her overly excited maid.
“Don’t you feel any anticipation, my lady? Aren’t you nervous? It’s been ten years of waiting for this proposal!”
Elise lowered her head. Her cheeks flushed red. It was an unusually pure smile for a woman nearing thirty.
Yet it was precisely the expression most fitting for a bride-to-be.
How could Elise not be nervous?
As Regina said, ten years—or rather, counting from when she first met Chase, a full fourteen years of waiting.
But having been let down so many times after building up hope, she simply held herself in check.
“If you’re ready, let’s go, my lady.”
Chase’s aide urged from outside.
Regina pinned Elise’s hair into place, revealing the elegant line of her neck.
Even Elise herself found her own slender, graceful neckline pleasing to behold.
Chase Royal Bedroka.
The king of this nation, her liege, and her lover—he adored her too.
“I’m ready. Let’s go.”
As Elise rose, the line of maids standing behind her bowed deeply.
Elise slowly crossed the palace corridor.
Administrative officials, gatekeepers, wandering knights—everyone in the palace courteously greeted her and made way.
Though she held only the title of viscountess and nothing else, no one found it strange that she moved through the palace as if it were her own home.
There was a reason.
It was Elise who had placed Chase—the king’s second son, who had lost his mother and support base at a young age—on the throne.
“Will you stay with me?”
A faint smile touched Elise’s lips as she recalled the time he’d timidly reached out his hand to her, oppressed as he was by the former queen.
Back then, Chase—thin, frail, unimpressive, and out of favor with the king—was unwelcome in the Warton household.
But Elise’s father, Fraser Warton, was in no position to refuse a royal marriage proposal.
Nor was he loyal enough to give the royal family exactly what they wanted.
The royal family had wanted Elise’s elder sister, Iris.
However, Fraser had no intention of risking Iris—the pride of House Warton—in such a gamble.
Thus, he presented Elise to Chase instead of Iris.
The second daughter—plain, untalented, and considered the family’s black sheep, unlike Iris.
Fortunately, Elise had liked Chase, who needed her.
She was fifteen; he was eighteen.
Elise poured everything she had into Chase. Through her sacrifice and devotion, Chase grew stronger each day.
She even used her magical engraving skills—once hidden in shame because she deemed them unfit for public display—for his sake.
Thanks to her, Chase became the undisputed greatest swordsman.
“Elise, if people find out you’re doing work meant for lowly half-breeds, they’ll look down on you.”
Of course, all credit went to Chase, and Elise’s existence remained thoroughly concealed.
Elise understood. His words had been true.
Her abilities, from her perspective, were closer to a curse than a talent.
Drawing simple magic circles—unlike casting spells directly—was considered menial labor fit only for half-breeds born of humans and elves.
With too little innate mana to become a mage, Elise had been the viscountcy’s shame.
Yet she had been useful to Chase. Elise honed her skill.
“Elise! Father wants to see me! He invited me on a hunt—just the two of us!”
Three years after they’d joined hands, the king—who had previously ignored Chase—began showing him attention.
It happened right after ventures conducted in Chase’s name started yielding results.

“You’re my goddess of fortune, Elise. When I meet Father today, I’ll tell him I want to marry you. You’re all I have. You’re my luck, my goddess.”
Chase composed love poems for her every day.
Then one day, with a solemn expression, he declared:
“I’m going to be greedy—for you. I want to become king.”
“Your Highness, I don’t desire the throne. I’m happy just being with you.”
“No, Elise. I’ll gift you the highest seat.”
From then on, Chase changed. Every action gained purpose, and he began making unreasonable requests of her without hesitation.
“Elise, I need money. Can you use promissory notes to borrow some?”
“Your Highness, are you suggesting I turn to loan sharks?”
“Loan sharks… That makes me sound so villainous. Money has no name, Elise. How many notes do you have?”
Chase’s greed grew daily. To satisfy it, Elise had to engage in acts bordering on criminal.
Chase bought people’s loyalty with money—but never managed to win the king’s heart.
In the end, he asked Elise to do the irreversible.
“We must get rid of Prince David. Elise, can you help me?”
Elise couldn’t readily agree to Chase’s request to eliminate David, the first prince.
David was Chase’s rival and enemy—but not a bad man.
Yet her hesitation didn’t last long. She wanted to leave the viscountcy behind and marry Chase as soon as possible.
A blessed marriage, a warm home, and a child resembling both her and Chase.
For her dream, Elise tightly shut her eyes.
She pinned every imaginable scandal onto the crown prince.
Illegal distribution of potions, leaks of confidential magical documents, attempted assassinations of Chase, and more.
She knew it was wrong—but she had no choice.
For Chase.
“How dare you harm my husband! Do you think I’ll let you get away with this?”
Iris—Elise’s elder sister and David’s wife at the time—rushed at her furiously.
Seeing the woman who had ignored and tormented her now ruined eased Elise’s guilt.
“It’s your own doing, sister.”
David was stripped of his title and imprisoned in a tower. Unable to bear the disgrace, he ended his own life.
Chase became crown prince. And malicious rumors about Elise began to spread.
“They say she personally handled the illegal potion trade.”
“Have you seen the fingernail marks on Prince Chase’s neck? She’s not only old but venomous too. Poor Prince Chase.”
Elise tried to defend herself actively, but Chase stopped her, saying baseless rumors would fade if ignored. Yet the rumors only grew louder.
“They say she seized her family’s entire fortune and drove them out! She’s apparently extremely extravagant.”
But it was fine. She had Chase.
She firmly believed that once she married Chase, all misunderstandings would clear.
“Elise, public opinion isn’t favorable. I’ll attend this banquet alone. My heart will always be with you. You understand, right?”
Even when Chase—now crown prince—started leaving her behind, she believed him.
“My lady! Do you know who attended the banquet this time? Lady Iris was there—and His Highness himself escorted her! How is that acceptable?”
When Elise confronted him about it, Chase explained:
“I asked Iris to host the envoys’ wives. One of them particularly admires her, and Iris is excellent at hosting.”
At some point, Iris’s name began appearing frequently in Chase’s speech.
When Elise showed discomfort, he embraced her to soothe her.
“Are you jealous? You’re the only one for me, Elise. I’m just assigning tasks to capable people. We’re using Iris, that’s all.”
She couldn’t help but believe him.
“Your Highness, our marriage…”
“Elise, please wait a little longer for our marriage. I want to become a man worthy of you.”
Chase remained consistent.
When he became king. If that was what it took.
Elise clenched her fist. She vowed to place him on that throne as soon as possible.

When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!

The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
Here’s the story synopsis:
