While Heathcliff was rushing desperately into the Empress’s palace, Greta was washing her hands in clean water. Though her hands were clearly unstained by anything, the water turned a faint crimson, as if stained with blood.

“Clean it up.”

At Greta’s command, the maidservant quietly moved away. At that very moment, the door burst open.

“Mother!”

It was Heathcliff. Knowing already that he had suffered humiliation at the Windsor townhouse and had come running here, Greta greeted him without surprise or reproach.

“Mother, I’m so ashamed and humiliated—I can’t possibly go on living!”

Heathcliff sobbed. His beard-stubbled face was already soaked with tears. Greta dried her wet hands with a handkerchief brought by another maidservant and opened her arms.

“Oh, Mother!”

Heathcliff threw himself into Greta’s embrace.

“The Crown Prince is such a spoiled child—only seeking his mother when things get hard.”

At Greta’s gentle comfort, Heathcliff sniffled. Though a faint metallic scent of blood lingered in Greta’s arms, Heathcliff deliberately pretended not to notice.

‘Mother must have done something dreadful again.’

He shuddered, knowing how the Marquis of Hopgrand had died. The overwhelming terror he’d felt in that moment swept over him once more. Yet Heathcliff no longer feared Greta blindly.

‘As long as I don’t turn her into an enemy.’

If he simply obeyed Greta’s words and remained a dutiful son, she would continue to be his most steadfast ally, just as she always had. She would become his surest, strongest shield and spear—and at the end of it all, she would bring Yuricien to him, pinned firmly in his grasp.
