Greta, flustered and at a loss, grasped Kendali’s hand resting lightly on the table. Kendali’s body stiffened visibly, but soon softened into a gentle smile as she met Greta’s eyes.

Watching Kendali look so at ease—as if she’d known Greta for ages—Lafine was inwardly shocked.

‘How could Mother possibly like someone else… and a woman, of all people?!’

Mother was Mother.

In Lafine’s mind, Mother was someone who should love her most of all and be drawn to men.
