Greta approached and sat gracefully on the edge of the bed, speaking softly.

“I heard you were researching late into the night again yesterday. It’s good to see you working hard, but I hope you’re not wearing yourself out. You strive for happiness, yet that very effort shouldn’t exhaust your body—wouldn’t that be putting the cart before the horse?”

This year, Greta had turned forty-five—two years older than Kendali—but her face looked at least ten years younger than hers. Kendali, who had been stealing glances at Greta’s skin, thinking even time must find her lovely, shook her head.

“No, Your Imperial Highness. I’m having a truly wonderful time. It is tiring, yes—but every time I see results, I feel such joy I can hardly describe it. Lately, I feel I’m getting to know myself better.”

“Oh?”

“Yes. I never realized until now that I could be so passionate about learning. Thank you truly.”

Kendali bowed once more to Greta. After hesitating a moment, Lafine also followed Kendali’s example and gave a quick, respectful bow. At that adorable sight, Greta let out a clear, ringing laugh like jade beads rolling on a silver tray.

“You don’t need to thank me every single time like this.”

“But I am grateful every single time. Because of you, Your Imperial Highness… I was able to escape that dreadful underground prison.”

That loathsome Windsor. Kendali murmured under her breath.

Just then, perhaps recalling how Kendali had once hung from the wall, Greta pulled Kendali’s hand toward herself with a pitying expression.

Kendali didn’t resist and settled gently beside Greta. The wounds from the chains had mostly healed, though unsightly scars remained.

“Why didn’t you remove those scars?”

“I left them on purpose.”

The one who suddenly cut in was Lafine, still standing.
