Clang!

“Aaah!”

“Carly?”

Carly, who had been silently watching the scene, suddenly snatched the cup from Jorgen’s grasp and hurled it to the floor.

Shards of glass shattered against the hard marble, scattering in every direction. In that instant, Jorgen instinctively lunged forward to shield Yuricien.

“……!”

As if determined that not even the tiniest shard would harm Yuricien—though Jorgen himself hadn’t even realized he’d moved.

Kendally shrieked at the sight of the cup shattered into pieces on the floor.

“What on earth is this! Who do you think you are!”

She looked ready to grab Carly by the hair, but Carly subdued her with nothing more than a glare.

‘W-what…?’

It felt as though she were standing before a wild beast. How could the eyes of such an ordinary-looking woman be so sharp and fierce?

Just as Kendally swallowed hard—

Carly quietly pointed to the floor with her knotted fingers. Forgetting even her own anger, Kendally followed Carly’s finger with her gaze. Everyone else present did the same.

“Huh…!”

“Good heavens…!”

“Hmph!”

Everyone except Carly and Kendally gasped in unison. Steam was rising from the lemonade spilled across the floor—not from heat, but because the marble itself was melting.

“P-poison!”

Andersen was the first to snap out of his shock and cry out.

“That woman—Kendally’s drink was poisoned! She dared to poison our master!”

Though his words refused to acknowledge Kendally as the Duchess, no one cared. Such a natural, swift assassination attempt was utterly shocking.

“A-a-ah, no!”

Kendally finally leapt up in denial.

“There must be some mistake! N-no, really! Why would I ever poison the Duke!”

Kendally’s face had gone pale as she stumbled backward. Her flamboyantly puffed red hair fell into disarray, but she paid it no mind, shaking her head frantically. Her golden eyes, usually gleaming with venom as they glared at Yuricien, now trembled with panic.

“R-right? You know that, don’t you? Darling, you know how much I love the Duke!”

Kendally desperately denied it, but no one present would believe her. Even if someone had been inclined to, seeing how the lemonade she’d offered Jorgen melted marble would’ve made them think twice.

Kendally’s mind went blank. She had to prove her innocence somehow.

“L-look at this! Isn’t it strange? If I’d really intended to harm the Duke, the glass shouldn’t have remained intact! A poison strong enough to melt marble—how could it sit perfectly fine in a glass!”

Ignoring the sharp glass cutting into her fingers, Kendally picked up a broken shard. Astonishingly, the glass that had held the marble-melting poison was unharmed—and so was Kendally’s hand, which now gripped the possibly poisoned cup.

“See! My hand’s perfectly fine too!”

She thrust it forward as proof, but Yuricien’s expression only grew darker. Yuricien felt a violent dizziness, so intense it seemed the world itself was twisting—whenever her anger peaked like this. Somewhere nearby, a dry twig snapped with a sharp crack.

Realizing the sound had come from her own hand, Yuricien was already standing before Kendally.

“How dare you!”

Yuricien shouted, then seized Kendally’s wrist—the one holding the glass shard—and twisted it as if to break it.

“Aaagh!”

Kendally screamed shrilly, but Yuricien didn’t hear a thing.

“How dare you poison him! Poison someone who’s only just returned! And you call yourself human?!”

Her furious voice boomed through the room. Andersen had never seen Yuricien this enraged in his entire life. Even if Jorgen retained any memories, this would likely be a first for him too.

“Aaah! What… what are you doing…!”

Kendally tried using her free hand to pry Yuricien’s grip off, but it was useless.

‘So scrawny, yet…!’

Where on earth was this strength coming from?

Yuricien gritted her teeth and hissed,

“You’re the culprit! That’s why you grabbed that glass shard so easily, without a shred of suspicion!”

“W-what?”

“Because you were certain there was no poison on it!”

“……!”

“If you weren’t the culprit, how could you possibly be so sure? You just saw with your own eyes the marble melting where the liquid touched—without certainty, how could you even think of grabbing the glass shard barehanded!”

Kendally froze, breath caught in her throat. Blinded by her immediate need to explain, she hadn’t considered this. She floundered, mouth opening and closing as she desperately searched for an excuse—but it was no use.

“I sense magical energy here… and not just any kind—an extremely malevolent, hate-filled magic.”

Carly, who had been reaching toward the liquid that melted and evaporated the marble to sense its aura, delivered the final blow.

“This scent… I encountered it once before, back when I was captain of the Imperial Capital’s First Knight Order. It’s Kashan poison.”

“But isn’t Kashan poison tasteless, colorless, and odorless!”

Andersen cried out in shock. Carly nodded gravely and, stepping in for Yuricien, restrained Kendally as she replied.

“Exactly. It’s not a natural poison—it was artificially created long ago by witches through dark magic.”

“Ugh!”

Kendally thrashed her arms, pinned behind her back, but if she couldn’t overpower Yuricien, there was no way she could best Carly.

“Kashan poison only activates when enchanted; otherwise, it’s indistinguishable from water. Once inside the body, it spreads to every corner—and without an antidote, it remains in you for life. It’s a truly terrifying poison.”

Carly gripped Kendally’s chin with a cold expression, forcing her to look up.

“As far as I know, Kashan poison is so complex that even an average mage would struggle to activate it. Yet you… how did you manage to trigger it without chanting a spell or even using a wand?”

“It’s a frame-up… Your Grace. I’m innocent.”

Tears brimming in her eyes from fear, Kendally rolled her golden eyes toward Jorgen in appeal—but it was futile. Carly, having noticed the strange gleam in Kendally’s eyes, quickly covered them with her bare hand.

“Come to think of it, I’ve heard that skilled mages can brainwash or hypnotize someone merely by locking eyes.”

Carly murmured lowly. Instantly, Kendally’s body jerked violently. A startled Yuricien immediately turned to Jorgen.

“You don’t mean… Father…?”

“We should investigate this thoroughly. May I take this woman elsewhere?”

“Yes, go ahead.”

At the swift reply, Carly gave a brief smile. For Kendally to follow Carly from here meant certain death—but Yuricien didn’t hesitate.

‘She truly is a young lady with unwavering resolve.’

Many would hesitate before actually killing someone, no matter how much they despised them.

They never dreamed that momentary pity could become a fatal opening, a knife piercing their own throat. But Yuricien, accustomed to sharpening blades, made her decision in one clean stroke.

‘A true ruler knows precisely when to show mercy—and when not to.’

Carly recalled her master’s words about Yuricien.

[She alone is the beast who reigns so beautifully.]

He’d said she carried herself atop everyone else as if it were the most natural thing in the world. In this fleeting moment, Carly deeply agreed with her master’s judgment.

“The next time you see this woman will be at the execution grounds. If you have anything to say, say it now.”

Carly’s words sent chills down the spine yet brought a strange sense of reassurance.

Yuricien opened her mouth as if to speak, then closed it again.

“No. I have nothing to say. It’d be a waste even to ask her to reflect on or regret her crime of daring to harm Father.”

It was wiser to erase her from sight while hatred and fury still burned bright—leaving not even a trace of regret behind. Thinking this, Yuricien firmly turned her head away from Kendally.

“A-a-ah, no! Please, wait, just a moment! I can explain everything! Yuricien, I’m your mother! Yuricien!”

Blindfolded by Carly, Kendally thrashed wildly, twisting her body and kicking her legs. The sound of glassware crunching underfoot filled the air.

“Good heavens, attempting to poison His Grace the Duke…”

“Could that carriage accident have been…?”

A brief commotion erupted as servants gathered to peek at the scene. Everyone glared at Kendally—not out of shame, but something far worse.

“I can explain everything!”

Kendally shrieked as Carly dragged her away. The thought that even a slight escape meant death made frantic alarm bells clang wildly in her mind.

“Please spare me! Just once—I’ll do anything! I’m innocent! It’s a false accusation!”

Behind Kendally, who no longer knew what she was saying, someone placed a hand to their mouth and called out,

“Don’t worry, Mama! If you’re truly innocent, the truth will surely come to light!”

Lafine, who had seemed so anxious just moments ago, now showed not a hint of that worry—even as her own mother was dragged off to the dungeon, she remained cheerfully composed.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.

How dare you, Kendali? How could you think of poisoning him the moment he returned? A witch? I didn’t expect that.
