Benjamin and Yuricien were literally frozen in place. They couldn’t move at all, as if nails had been driven into their feet. They felt like wax figures unable to twitch even a single finger, yet tears like molten candle wax streamed down their faces endlessly.

The damage caused by the undead up to this point hadn’t actually been that severe. Or rather, it couldn’t be considered severe. Everyone had kept quiet about any harm they’d suffered from the undead, fearing they might lose their returned family members.

Even so, they’d braced themselves for definite losses—but the scene unfolding before them now far exceeded anything Benjamin and Yuricien had imagined. The undead, having lost all reason, were no longer the returned loved ones. They were merely monsters attacking humans on instinct. Not a trace of humanity could be seen in those corpses resurrected without hearts or minds. Thus, only the living still held emotions.

“Please, snap out of it!”

“Don’t do this—come back!”

No matter how desperately they wept, clung, and cried out, those creatures had never truly been human to begin with. People collapsed helplessly under the undead’s attacks, unable even to consider fleeing. The imperial palace had vanished entirely, as though it had never existed—so where could anyone possibly hide, no matter how far they ran? It seemed giving up life out of despair wasn’t such a difficult thing to do after all.

“We have to go.”

Yuricien, watching those people, bit down hard on their lower lip and spoke.

“We don’t have time to stay here like this.”

Yuricien, who had been sobbing so violently their breath hitched in their throat, barely managed to move and grabbed Benjamin’s forearm. They tried to exert strength, but their stiff hand couldn’t even form a hook—it merely scratched at Benjamin’s sleeve. Still, Yuricien kept trying to hold onto Benjamin, straining with all their might to pull him along.

“Even as we stand here, many are getting hurt and dying. We must resolve this crisis. We know how to fix it!”

He knew. Yet his feet wouldn’t budge. The home he’d shared with his parents was gone. The very space that held even the tiniest traces of happy memories had vanished entirely. There was a vast difference between merely understanding this fact in his mind and actually witnessing it before his eyes. Benjamin felt as though he’d lost his entire childhood all at once.

“How can I go?”

Above all, he wanted to help the suffering citizens of the Solzereon Empire. He couldn’t just flee from this place, abandoning the imperial citizens fighting the undead. He didn’t want to, and he shouldn’t. After all, he was the Crown Prince—the sole reason he’d struggled so hard to survive until now was to uphold the name of Crown Prince and rule the Solzereon Empire.

The Solzereon Empire Benjamin would rule needed those people. Those very individuals standing there were the Solzereon Empire Benjamin wished to govern. Though he sensed he was becoming overly fixated on this thought, he couldn’t shake it off. In the end, Benjamin made his choice.
