‘How did we even get this far…?’

All their effort had been for nothing—only a waste of time. Benjamin let out another stifled sigh at this unbelievable reality. He stared blankly into the space where not even a single sheet of paper, let alone a book, was visible. Yet, no matter how long he stared, a book would hardly appear out of thin air.

“Could there be some kind of barrier?”

Benjamin muttered, though his voice carried neither hope nor expectation. Since it wasn’t a question directed at Yuricien, she remained silent. Thus, the cramped chamber—so small one could see all four walls by merely stretching out an arm—was soon engulfed in a deathly silence. To Yuricien, it sounded like the very voice of despair and defeat.

After a long while, Benjamin finally turned toward Yuricien, having gathered his disheartened and frustrated emotions.

“Then shall we go back up? Mitchell and Ivan are probably waiting.”

“Yes. They must be worried something happened to us.”

Yuricien spoke with a gentle smile, as if soothing his wounded heart. Benjamin, touched once more by her thoughtful kindness, composed himself and turned toward the stairs. Yuricien watched Benjamin’s retreating back as he began climbing, then glanced back at the cramped space with regretful eyes. Just then—

“…Your Highness! Your Highness!!!”

Yuricien urgently called out to Benjamin. Startled by her cry—so desperate it seemed she might faint at any moment—Benjamin quickly ducked down the stairs.

“What? What’s wrong?”

Could it be an ambush? Or a trap? He scanned the surroundings with sharp, wary eyes. But the narrow space remained utterly quiet. Yuricien, standing under the lamp’s faint glow, appeared safe. Yet her expression was far from calm—her lower lip trembled as she stared into the completely empty void.

“Oh no, this can’t be… It was definitely there just a moment ago…”

“Yuricien?”

Benjamin called out to her in a puzzled tone, but she kept gazing fixedly into the darkness. Feeling uneasy, Benjamin hurried down the stairs—and only then did Yuricien react.
