The rusted iron gate, its seals broken, swung open with a heavy groan. The deepening yellow light resembled a beast’s pupil. Benjamin, facing it, felt as though he were being swallowed whole by that yellow glow. This was the catacomb—said to be secretly passed down only to the Pope—the very gate to the graveyard that, the last time it opened, required dozens of priests clinging to it just to barely pry it apart.

‘So many people have opened this door, yet the tradition was passed only to the Pope, meaning neither Coperador nor even I knew about it. That must mean none of those who opened it survived unscathed.’

Benjamin had finally managed to unravel the multiple layers of seals on the gate. But before he could even feel relief or joy at having broken them, he hastily cast a holy law barrier around them and shouted,

“Cover your mouths!”

It was at that very instant.

Whoosh-

The air trapped inside rushed out as a violent gust. That wind, mingled with hazy dust, was clearly visible like a flowing mist. And glinting sharply between it were tiny, glittering specks.

“It’s poison powder.”

Mitchell, inside the holy law barrier with a handkerchief pressed to his mouth, murmured quietly. The poison and various harmful substances sizzled and crackled as they burned away upon touching the holy law barrier.

“Wait a moment. Something feels off. Why didn’t the Pope warn us there’d be a poison powder trap?”

At Ivan’s words, Mitchell and Yuricien flinched. Ivan continued, addressing the two,

“Think about it. This isn’t a door that’s never been opened in a lifetime—it was opened once long ago, right? Then the Pope must have known poison was placed here.”

Yet none of them had heard anything specific from Jorge. That was why Benjamin had urgently cast the holy law barrier, and why everyone was covering their noses and mouths with handkerchiefs instead of proper gas masks.

“Could this place possibly be a trap?”
