Kisa momentarily doubted her own ears. It felt as though an outrageous statement had just leapt from Seyard’s mouth—perhaps she’d misheard.

“…I-I’m sorry, but what did you just say?”

Yet Seyard, his expression unaltered, repeated the exact same words as before.

“Won’t you marry me?”

Good heavens. What on earth is this man saying?

Perhaps sensing her confusion, he elaborated slightly more clearly than before.

“This isn’t a proposal of ordinary marriage.”

“Then what is it?”

“You wish to avoid the marriage looming before you—and so do I.”

“That’s right.”

“There’s a traditional method nobles in such situations have used since ancient times.”

“You don’t mean…”

“Precisely—marry someone else first. Ah, you’re thinking: what difference is there between a rushed marriage and an unwanted one?”

She hadn’t quite thought that. After all, proposing marriage to someone else had been her own tactic to persuade the count. The real problem was the lack of a suitor with better terms than Daniel.

“But such drawbacks can be resolved if we establish a contract before marriage.”

“A contract?”

“We set an expiration date for the marriage. Once that period ends, both parties are free.”

“…So you mean divorce?”

Divorce! Even worse than a broken engagement. Though some dared to divorce despite the risks, the judgment they received from society was harsh indeed.

“One might call it that. Of course, if divorce proves practically impossible due to social constraints, I’d consider alternatives like separation.”

Watching Seyard tilt his head in earnest contemplation, Kisa belatedly realized her mistake. His shockingly unconventional suggestion had drawn her into questioning him—yet this was impossible from the start.

“Seyard, I think I understand what you’re trying to say.”

“Do you, truly?”

“Yes—it’s a marriage of convenience, right? I’ve heard of it in romance novels. But it’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“…My father would never allow it.”

No ordinary background would impress Count Bansfeldt. Just from his clothing and speech, it was clear Seyard hailed from the upper class.

But that alone wasn’t enough. Her father, after all, intended to sell his meticulously groomed, beautiful daughter at the highest possible price.

Though she offered no further explanation, Seyard seemed to grasp her meaning. After a brief silence, he apologized.

“I’m sorry. I suppose I pushed my own wishes too forcefully.”

“Not at all! You made the suggestion thinking of me.”

“Even so, I must have startled you terribly.”

“I was a bit surprised. I never imagined Seyard would even consider such a thing.”

Seyard, looking slightly embarrassed, smoothed his bangs.

“In truth, I’ve been searching for another prospective spouse, but suitable matches are hard to find. So I’ve been pondering this—if there were clear benefits to marrying me, perhaps someone would be tempted.”

For a moment, Kisa was astonished that someone so attractive also struggled with marriage—but then it struck her: his position mirrored her own.

He, too, had to choose a spouse carefully, considering family background. At this point, finding an eligible match without an existing engagement would be difficult.

Kisa stared quietly at the man seated beside her. Discovering he shared her very human dilemma made him feel inevitably closer, despite their outwardly unchanged circumstances.

“Seyard?”

“Yes, Kisa?”

Though nothing had visibly improved, she felt oddly at ease. For the first time that day, Kisa smiled sincerely.

“Let’s both keep trying. If we search diligently, we might find someone good, right?”

It was a statement with no basis whatsoever—she worried it might sound irresponsible—yet his reply came swiftly.

“That’s well said. We’ll surely each marry our ideal partner.”

Seyard smiled, then added a moment later,

“Both you and I.”

[This is the timeline separator]

Whether it was fortunate or not, Count Bansfeldt—who would surely hear reports from Marsha later—made no comment about Kisa’s behavior at the Royal Library. Perhaps because she’d returned home early this time, unlike before.

Or perhaps the count’s attention was focused elsewhere: the new Duke Hiran, who had inherited the title after his brother’s death.

Though nearly a month had passed since he’d inherited the dukedom, his complete absence from society had become a matter of intense speculation.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

‘Duke Hiran.’

A figure of such stature would certainly draw the politically astute count’s close attention—though Kisa couldn’t care less.

To her, the younger Duke Hiran was a stranger whose face she’d never seen, and she’d had little connection with his older brother either. She’d heard they were twins, but their temperaments might differ—the previous Duke Hiran had rarely appeared in society, just like his brother.

Of course, she’d once been introduced to him by the princess during social gatherings and had crossed paths with him a few times.

But each time, Kisa had deliberately avoided the late Duke Hiran. Not only did he have the red hair she disliked, but his first impression had been thoroughly unpleasant.

Perhaps that was why his face barely remained in her memory.

Suddenly, she recalled meeting him for the first time at Princess Arta’s birthday gala, when she was younger. Visheak Hiran had indeed been, as society claimed, the epitome of nobility—ruthless and devoid of warmth.

His aura closely resembled that of her own father, Count Bansfeldt, prompting Kisa to exchange only the briefest greeting before hastily excusing herself.

There was no need for two people whose mere presence felt like a crime to exist in the same space.

Life was truly ironic. The younger brother—once an outsider with nothing to envy as the princess’s fiancé and heir to House Hiran—had now inherited the family’s entire power and fortune.

Who could have foreseen this just two months ago, before the previous Duke Hiran passed away?

Many wondered what kind of man the new duke could be, having spent half his life in a monastery—but not Kisa. She had enough troubles of her own.

“Miss, are you throwing these away?”

“Yes.”

At Marsha’s question, Kisa nodded as she looked at the envelopes in the wastebasket. Colorful letters adorned with ribbons and pressed flowers disappeared among the trash.

For someone who always stored correspondence from friends in her letter box, this decision seemed unusually cold.

“That one’s from Miss Melissa, isn’t it?”

Her nanny, adjusting Kisa’s attire, asked with a worried expression.

“Why suddenly? Did you really quarrel with Miss Melissa?”

“It’s not like that.”

“I don’t know what happened, but throwing away a friend’s heartfelt letter isn’t like you.”

If sending multiple letters filled with excuses and self-justifications counted as “heartfelt,” then perhaps the nanny wasn’t wrong.

Yet every time Melissa’s letters arrived, Kisa merely skimmed them before tossing them into the wastebasket.

“Honestly, Miss—you’ve been so strange lately. Is it a belated adolescence?”

Ignoring her nanny’s sigh loud enough to sink the earth, Kisa examined herself in the mirror. Delicate pink silk fabric was embroidered with deeper-hued flowers.

Wearing one of her favorite dresses, Kisa spun in a slow circle. Even to her own eyes, her appearance was flawless.

“Our miss truly is! So beautiful!”

Even the nanny, who’d just been sighing, clapped her hands in delight.

“Yes! Why not enjoy the opera thoroughly and lift your spirits—then reconcile with Miss Melissa?”

Unfortunately, the last part was impossible; she only intended to enjoy the opera.

“If you’re free, please come.”

On their second meeting, just before parting, Seyard had gifted Kisa opera tickets. He’d happened to obtain them, with two extra seats.

“Come? Does that mean you’ll be watching the same opera?”

“Yes—if fortune favors us, we might even meet there. Ah, not in adjacent seats, so please don’t worry about misunderstandings.”

“No, I’m not worried about that.”

“Good. I’ve heard it’s a highly praised recent performance—you’ll likely enjoy it.”

*The Lord’s Castle*—she recalled hearing noble ladies rave about it at the princess’s tea party.

Honestly, perhaps this wasn’t the time for Kisa to leisurely attend performances.

But since Seyard had given her the tickets, she wanted to accept his gesture—and a streak of defiance flared within her. If Daniel could freely do as he pleased during this turmoil, why couldn’t she?

Moreover, just as expected after the tea party, rumors about Kisa and Daniel had begun to spread. Though no one said it outright yet, the letters probing her feelings were clear proof.

Facing crowds in this situation felt burdensome, but she loathed the idea of hiding at home, letting people mistakenly believe she was heartbroken over Daniel. She would act completely unruffled—and enjoy the opera without issue.

Resolved, Kisa left the estate under her nanny’s watchful eyes. The opera house was indeed packed—clearly, the performance was popular.

Though Seyard had given her two tickets, she’d come alone, having no one particular to invite, and headed straight for the hall entrance.

“Oh! Lady Bansfeldt, isn’t it?”

Unluckily, she ran into a young noble from a familiar family—a man who’d openly flirted with her even after her engagement was announced.

“Hello.”

“You’re here to see *The Lord’s Castle* as well?”

“Yes, well, I’ll be—”

“Wait! Where’s your seat? Mine beside me is free—if you don’t mind, why not join me?”

He was unusually persistent today. Could he have heard the rumors of her rift with Daniel and decided to seize the opportunity?

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
