Death had settled upon the forest that once brimmed with lush greenery.

Though much time had passed since the flames that had engulfed the entire forest subsided, the acrid stench of smoke still lingered. The air stood stagnant, as if even the wind that had passed through the forest had been consumed by the fire.

Ashes rose into the air every time the knights moved.

Adrian covered his mouth and nose with a handkerchief and kicked aside the dead monster lying before him.

“Hah, all this trouble over something so insignificant.”

The monster that had polluted a vast area near the capital was merely the size of an ordinary wolf. With no place left to hide, it had been torn apart by the knights’ swords without offering any real resistance.

Floyd looked around the forest that, just a few hours ago, had teemed with life.

Because of that tiny monster, the damage had been far too great. He blamed himself for being weak. If only he had honed his senses sharper and gained full control over those wild flames, he would never have reduced this vast forest to ashes.

At Adrian’s nod, one of the knights drew his sword and began dissecting the monster, harvesting valuable materials to sell for a high price.

Items like the monster’s heart, claws, eyes, and blood fetched exorbitant prices because they were hard to obtain despite their many uses. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say the wealth stored in Torkan’s treasuries owed much to such monster byproducts.

“It doesn’t seem to have been very strong. There’s only one mana stone, and it’s even opaque.”

Kirshan spoke as he glanced casually at the dissection.

Whether large or small, every monster carried a stone-like object inside its body; the number and clarity of these mana stones varied depending on the monster’s size and strength. Some powerful monsters even possessed mana stones so transparent and brilliant they resembled precious gems.

“It’d be better if it were just strong. Clever ones are harder to deal with. All this mess over a single creature…”

The forest scorched by Floyd’s fire wouldn’t see life return for a long while.
