The knight’s oath was a vow made in the name and honor of knighthood. Breaking such an oath would bring such shame that the news would spread like wildfire, drawing scorn from everyone; thus, knights never lightly swore a knight’s oath—even to their own liege.

Hexton was now telling Roxiana, with whom he’d barely exchanged a proper conversation, that he intended to make that very knight’s oath.

“Lord Leonardro, please don’t do this.”

Roxiana pleaded, but Hexton kept his head lowered.

“If Your Highness does not grant me permission, I shall remain here—whether for a month or a year.”

Seeing Hexton’s stubbornness, Roxiana was reminded of Robert, her former royal guard. Feeling tears welling up, she covered her mouth with both hands and spoke.

“Robert, who was once my royal guard, used to grumble every time I got into trouble, saying I should never have made him swear the knight’s oath.”

Hexton chuckled softly, still bowing his head.

“I’d be glad if my relationship with Your Highness could become something like that.”

She could hold back no longer.

She wanted to die. It felt like a sin to have survived alone. Even breathing felt like an apology, laden with guilt and regret.

Yet she craved the gentleness that reminded her of happier times—so much so that it made her yearn. She was a cowardly, selfish woman who, though her family had been cast into a cold well, still longed for warmth.

She could no longer refuse Hexton’s request.

Thus, Roxiana slowly raised her right hand.

The moment Roxiana gave her consent, Hexton immediately knelt on one knee without hesitation. He gently took the tip of her fingers and briefly pressed his lips to the back of her hand.
