Count Diobe sipped the tea placed before him and glanced at the woman sitting across from him.

‘Could it be that this Wenley person is actually a woman…?’

Masha, wearing her glasses, was carefully reading through the documents Count Diobe had brought.

Upon seeing the surname “Wenley,” he had vaguely assumed the person was male. As the hotel’s representative, he naturally expected a dignified, mature man—not a woman.

‘No, this might actually work out better.’

He barely managed to swallow the hot tea and stole another glance at Masha. Women, he assumed, would be easier to persuade—softer-hearted, quick to open their purses if their emotions were gently stirred.

“There are so many pitiful, unfortunate children—orphans abandoned at birth, war orphans… If Director Wenley lends your support to help these poor souls, it would be absolutely invaluable. Our Gloria Foundation is even backed by the Imperial Court…”

Masha removed her glasses and slowly placed them on the table along with the documents.

“And what happens to these ‘pitiful, unfortunate children’ after they leave your facility?”

“Pardon?”

“Is there no follow-up support? Once they come of age, do they simply receive the amount listed as sponsorship and that’s it? With that sum, they couldn’t even afford a proper room—not even in the city outskirts, let alone the capital.”

Masha stared directly at Count Diobe. Flustered, the count averted his eyes and wiped the nervous sweat forming on his brow.

“I’m also skeptical about your vague claims regarding beggars who struggle to adapt to life in the Empire. There’s nothing specific here about their rehabilitation or long-term welfare.”

Masha poured a deluge over the sandcastle Count Diobe had so carelessly built.

At her pointed remarks, the count’s lips curled inward. He’d assumed a hastily written proposal and an emotional appeal would be enough—but his opponent was clearly no pushover.
