Someone stood squarely in front of Mercedes, who had been walking calmly forward.

“Leopold! Why are you doing this too? Move aside.”

“I am one of those in charge of this area. We cannot allow someone whose purpose is unknown and whose identity has not been properly disclosed to enter a place overflowing with vital documents.”

He was a young man with red hair and freckles, giving a mischievous impression, but now he looked utterly cold.

“You know who this lady is.”

“If I know, does that make the rules meaningless? Why would someone who could simply turn himself in come here at all?”

“Oh! Leopold, watch your tongue! At least let her inside to speak. Didn’t His Imperial Majesty instruct us to treat Lady Mercedes with care?”

Again, the elderly aide attempted mediation, but it fell on deaf ears. The young man replied stubbornly.

“Naturally, I can obey orders outside this office. But this office is different. It is precisely where one must state who they are and reveal their purpose. To disregard this fundamental rule is to be a sycophant. I must adhere to the rules here—”

“You are quite right. Rules exist to be followed. And I am indeed a very suspicious person.”

Mercedes spoke before the red-haired youth finished.

“I am rumored to be a murderer, a woman who has been married, and an unsuitable Crown Princess. You are excellent officers; surely you have a general understanding of me.”

And with perfect calm, she met his gaze, openly revealing her own shame.

Her emerald eyes remained as empty as ever.
