The next day.

Even as dragged away by the guards, Sesenia’s body remained unresponsive.

Not knowing what she was trying so hard to conceal, Elzer had paralyzed Sesenia’s entire body, leaving her unable to speak properly.

Thus, she was seated upon the scaffold.

“Sesenia Vestel. Though you are the Empress of this nation, not only did you mistreat Elzer—who carries the Emperor’s seed—but you even attempted to murder the Prince, the Emperor’s own child. For this, you stand here to receive your execution. Do you consent?”

“……”

“Will you not answer? If you remain silent, I shall take it as consent.”

“…No.”

Her lips finally moved with immense effort, as if driven by sheer will not to die without uttering a word. Her mouth still numb, requiring tremendous effort just to form speech—but even this small act was enough.

“No?”

That feeble word was all the defiance Sesenia could muster. She glared at her elder sister Elzer, who held a child in her arms. Elzer’s eyes widened in surprise at hearing Sesenia speak, but she soon shook her head, her expression clearly saying, “There’s nothing you can do now.”

The Emperor stood protectively with his arm draped over her shoulder, while Ian stood one step behind, grinning gleefully.

“Yes. I do not consent.”

But the more Sesenia spoke, the more unsettling the crowd’s reaction became.

“How can she be so shameless? She tried to kill the Prince—and her own elder sister!”

“Good heavens! There’s no demon like a human being!”

Ignoring the accusations hurled at her, she raised her voice.

“Is it not a crime for the Emperor himself—the ruler of this nation—to have committed adultery with the Empress’s elder sister? Was it wrong of me, precisely because she was my elder sister, to spare her life and merely send her north? I didn’t even know she was pregnant, nor that she had given birth! If I had known… if I had known…!”

What would have changed?

Sesenia, about to continue, suddenly felt all her strength drain away.

“Known what? Would anything have changed?”

At that moment, the Emperor questioned her.

She wanted to reply, but his words made her bite down hard on her lips.

‘Indeed, what would have changed?’

Yet she refused to go silently. At the very least, she wished to plant seeds of doubt in their minds—so that even after her death, and even if happiness came to them, they would someday begin to distrust one another.

In a situation where no one would listen to the truth, this was all she could do.

“I know you won’t listen no matter what I say, but I must speak anyway. Think how guilty you must feel—yesterday, Elder Sister Elzer even poisoned me to silence my words.”

“Is that all you have to say?”

She knew full well her words would do nothing.

“Everything is a fabrication they’ve concocted.”

Nevertheless, she had to speak. She alone could defend herself.

“Nonsense.”

Only then did Sesenia realize the truth. Seeing the Emperor unmoved by anything she said—except for her claim about the poison—she understood everything.

“Nonsense… But now I see—you knew all along, didn’t you?”

“Knew what?”

“That Elder Sister had given birth. That I did nothing wrong. Your question—’What would have changed?’—proves you, the Emperor, already knew everything.”

Watching him, Sesenia finally felt it: she had been the only one in the dark. Everyone else had known.

“I know you won’t listen no matter what I say. But tell me this—don’t you find it strange? Both you, the Emperor, and everyone else seem far too eager to quickly bury everything. Executing me like this, without even a trial, despite my being Empress… And even after I testified that Elzer, my own elder sister, poisoned me—you’re all trying to hush it up! Isn’t that far too suspicious? As if you’re desperate to kill me as fast as possible?”

Sesenia cried out toward those condemning her.

“If that’s not the case—if there’s truly nothing to hide—then grant me a trial! I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong!”

The atmosphere shifted dramatically. No matter how grave her alleged crimes, she was still the Empress.

And like reeds bending in the wind, the people began to waver. Everything had moved with unnatural haste. Even if her guilt seemed certain, executing her without trial was unprecedented.

Those who belatedly realized this began whispering amongst themselves.

As if to quell the murmurs, the Emperor hastily spoke.

“Ridiculous.”

“On the contrary—isn’t it suspicious that you’d execute me here without even a trial? Both you, the Emperor, and Elder Sister Elzer must have something to hide, which is why you’re both so desperate to silence me. Am I wrong?”

The crowd’s whispers grew louder.

“Those who’ve already decided to kill me won’t be swayed, so there’s nothing I can do… But I hope you understand one thing: they’re killing me with lies.”

She had already given up on everything.

They weren’t killing her out of ignorance—they were doing it to better serve their own purposes. Once she realized that, there was nothing left to change.

“And you’d better be careful. Honestly… who’s to say that child is truly the Emperor’s? Isn’t the Prince, who once called me his dear friend for years yet betrayed me to side with my elder sister, also suspicious? Even if he’s of the imperial bloodline… he might not even be your child.”

Sesenia smirked as she looked at him.

“W-what insane nonsense are you spouting…!”

“Do not insult my pure love!!”

As expected, Ian flared up in anger, veins bulging in his forehead.

“Whether it’s pure love or a child born from flitting between men… who can truly say?”

“So that’s all you’ve got to say, Sesenia?”

Elzer, holding the child, looked at Sesenia with contempt. Indeed, that was all she had—words without evidence. But Elzer failed to notice the Emperor behind her, whose expression had instantly changed.

“Do you not realize your words could be considered an insult to the imperial family? How foolish of you.”

“So that’s all the threat you’ve got, Elzer? Since I’m going to die anyway, what does it matter if I insult the imperial family or not? You’re the foolish one, Elzer.”

You’re finished.

At a glance, her niece—the child her elder sister had borne—was unmistakably of imperial blood.

Golden hair—that trait belonged only to the imperial family. It was obvious the child was the Emperor’s. Yet doubt had already taken root in the Emperor’s mind.

‘You won’t be truly happy for the rest of your life, Elder Sister.’

Sesenia smirked as she gazed at them.

“If Prince Ian truly had no connection to Elzer, he wouldn’t have stepped forward so eagerly as a witness, would he, Your Majesty? Well, that’s all I have to say. I won’t drag this out any further. And be careful—an elder sister who could calmly concoct poison for her own younger sister, and Elzer, who’s clearly intimate with Prince Ian, won’t leave you, the Emperor, in peace.”

The Emperor’s expression hardened sharply. Seeing this, Sesenia pressed her lips shut, as if she knew far more but chose not to speak further. The seed of suspicion she had sown had already taken root—in the Emperor and everyone present.

‘The Emperor had never been able to father a child.’

Not with her, nor with any other woman he’d spent nights with. Rumors had even spread that he was barren. That was why he cherished Elzer’s child above all others.

But now, those very facts fueled his growing doubts.

Even Ian’s gesture of reassuringly stroking Elzer’s shoulder—meant to calm her—only deepened and multiplied their suspicions.

“Please execute Sesenia! She’s just spouting nonsense!”

“Nonsense, you say…?”

Only then did Elzer notice the Emperor’s gaze upon her—a look colder and more terrifying than before.

“Elzer, you really did try to silence your own younger sister.”

“No! It’s just… it’s just…!”

“Did you truly use poison?”

“It’s… it’s just that I feared she’d say something absurd! I didn’t want her unsettling you with strange talk!”

“So you admit to using poison.”

Elzer’s reason for poisoning Sesenia remained unclear. Perhaps she feared Sesenia would repeat in court what she’d said in prison before her death. Or perhaps she wanted to prove she could destroy Sesenia with her own strength alone.

Whatever the case, Elzer had truly been foolish.

At that moment—

“Waaahh!!”

The child in Elzer’s arms began to cry. Elzer had pinched the baby’s arm, desperate to escape the situation. Sesenia, facing them directly, saw it all with perfect clarity.

“Your Majesty, your child is crying. What shall we do…? He must be cold. He’s been in this frightening place too long.”

Yet the Emperor did not move, as if waiting to hear something more.

“Please execute me.”

It was then.

Sesenia spoke.

“What did you say?”

“I said, just execute me. You were going to kill me anyway, weren’t you? You wouldn’t spare me even if you held a trial, nor would you take my side no matter what I said. So just kill me.”

Who could ever ask for their own death? Yet Sesenia stood resolute—like someone eager for her end to come swiftly, as if she had something to hide.

“Why? Can you no longer bring yourself to kill me?”

“Nonsense. Sesenia Vestel, you are hereby sentenced to death.”

That was the end.

“I, Sesenia Vestel… desire death.”

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…
