Only she would ever give such advice to the very person she sought revenge against.

Who else could possibly tell their target of vengeance to be smart? To get a grip? Normally, one would prefer the other to act as foolishly as possible.

But Sesenia hated that.

‘My death was merely the result of falling into a trap set by a clever person. It couldn’t possibly have been that fool who killed me.’

If it really had been that idiot who caused her death—if she had truly perished so unfairly at their hands—she feared she would drown in self-loathing and despair.

Having said all she needed to say, Sesenia turned away without sparing even a glance and returned to her room. Whether Elzer had gained some insight or sensed urgency, she showed no further reaction.

A few more days passed.

Only two days remained until the week when the sale of Hephria cotton and firewood was to be announced. Sesenia sat reading a book, drinking tea with more leisure than usual.

Then, an unexpected visitor came to see her.

A knock sounded, and before she could respond, the door opened. Seeing the door swing open without her permission, Sesenia’s expression hardened.

“Do you enter without the owner’s permission?”

It was Ian. At the sight of him, Sesenia felt her stomach twist.

“We were never the sort who needed permission to enter, were we? Sesenia. Aren’t you even glad to see an old friend after so long?”

Back then, she hadn’t realized it—but now, Ian seemed just like a snake: coiling his long body around his prey and bewitching them with his forked tongue. Merely thinking of him filled her with dread.
