“Why did you abandon us?”

The young man, appearing to be in his late twenties, had a gaunt and haggard face.

Though he wore the uniform of the royal army, the fabric peeking out from his collar was so grimy and saturated with grime that calling it ragged felt too generous.

Yet his eyes brimmed with venomous intensity.

“He appears to be a runaway serf from Pagos.”

A subordinate added in explanation.

“A serf?”

Kai An knew the serfs of Pagos had fought against the royal army, but this man—wearing borrowed clothes and appearing here to ambush him—was something Kai An couldn’t readily comprehend.

“Even if it’s true that Rowen is far removed and borders the royal domain, how could you just wash your hands of us overnight as if we meant nothing?”

“You scoundrel! How dare you speak such nonsense to His Grace!”

A subordinate, conscious of Kai An, kicked the kneeling man in the backside. The man let out a short cry of pain but stubbornly pressed on, determined to say his piece to Kai An.

“You promised to make us commoners!”

Just moments earlier, this man had glared at him with murder in his eyes, but now suddenly deflated, his voice choked with tears.

“You said we could choose whatever work we pleased! That we’d form a farmers’ cooperative to fairly share our harvests and live well-fed, prosperous lives!”

The man’s demeanor had shifted completely—he now looked as anxious and lost as a child separated from his parents.
