“Oh, this.”

I stared blankly at Adrian before snapping out of my daze. Though the surroundings were dim, there was no hiding my mud-splattered, pitiful legs and bare feet.

I’d come knowing for sure Adrian would be at the hideout, feeling nothing but joy—yet now, faced with his surprised expression, I suddenly saw myself through his eyes.

After all, if I saw a friend wandering barefoot and covered in mud, I’d be taken aback too. I might even wonder if they’d stuck a flower in their hair.

“I stepped in mud by accident while dodging a soccer ball on the field.”

I tried to brush it off with an awkward laugh, but Adrian’s expression, at a glance, wasn’t exactly cheerful. It was dark, as if silently cursing some invisible person.

It felt strange seeing Adrian without his usual smile, though turning back now would’ve been absurd.

Before he could sit up and get serious, I quickly pushed through the bushes and moved closer to him.

“Can I sit beside you?”

“Of course.”

His tense expression softened slightly, and then, with a worried look, he murmured, “It’s night—you must be cold…” He firmly refused when I tried to give him back my jacket.

A few strands of his neatly combed blond hair had fallen onto his pale forehead, ruffled by the wind. His blue eyes had darkened, and the corners of his mouth, which usually curved upward, had drooped heavily.

Adrian fixed his gaze on my cheek like an arrow and said,

“Normally, I’d suggest we head back because of the chill, but right now… I don’t want to.”
