At first glance, they resembled earth sprites, but their aura was entirely different. If earth sprites evoked the feeling of a sun-drenched garden, these creatures resembled a damp, shadowy hollow untouched by sunlight.

Their round eyes, entirely black, gleamed like oiled glass marbles, and their dark skin appeared rough and coarse like rotting tree roots.

Kai instinctively realized that these were the very beings who, long ago, had called his name and mimicked his words—they were earth ghouls.

The creature standing motionless atop the wide desk slowly turned its head toward Kai after listening to Will’s words.

Turning its neck with unnatural, jerky motions like a broken wooden puppet, the creature locked eyes with Kai, then stretched its mouth into an unnaturally wide grin that split its face and tilted its head abruptly to the side.

Yet even with its head twisted at a grotesque angle, its black gaze remained fixed firmly on Kai.

Kai hesitated, unsure how to react, when Will’s murmured words continued.

“No matter how hard I search, it’s nowhere to be found. You said it would be there, but it simply isn’t. Just how am I supposed to take it from them?”

Will, who had been flipping through an old book and whispering quickly, fell silent upon noticing the creature staring intently at something.

Still hunched over the book, shoulders deeply curved, he suddenly lifted his head sharply toward where Kai stood.

When their eyes met, Kai flinched in surprise, nearly drawing the sword at his hip.

For just an instant, Will’s pupils had turned completely black—just like the creatures’—before swiftly returning to normal.

Though only his eyes had changed, Will’s face, which had seemed gloomy and aggressive, instantly reverted to its usual calm and gentle expression.

“Master?”

Even as he called out to Will, Kai kept his hand on the scabbard at his side, ready to strike at a moment’s notice.
