As soon as Will stepped out of Verdura Castle, a shadow waiting nearby approached him stealthily. From hood to shoes, everything he wore was entirely black, like a shadow itself.

“The Emperor summons you.”

Though the shadow had approached without a sound, Will showed no surprise and silently followed behind him. He appeared calm and composed, as if he had expected this all along.

The shadow, sent by the Emperor’s command to approach Will, walked beside him as if escorting him, yet his excitement was unmistakable. To them, Duke Will was nothing short of a legend.

Just seeing him up close was a great honor; being able to speak to him directly and even escort him made the shadow unbearably nervous. He swallowed hard, trying desperately to calm himself.

“How long have you served as the Emperor’s shadow?”

Breaking a brief silence, Will’s question made the shadow tense up immediately as he answered.

“This is my third year.”

“And yet, if you still can’t conceal your emotions?”

Will stopped walking and spoke, causing the shadow’s expression to harden instantly. Though his heart pounded wildly inside, he struggled to keep his voice outwardly calm and steady.

But Will had already noticed the subtle tremor in his voice and his quickened breathing.

“I’m sorry. It’s just… the joy of meeting Your Grace.”

Will’s expression didn’t change at all, even at the embarrassingly earnest words. Instead, he fixed the young shadow with an even sterner gaze.

“The Emperor’s shadows are beings without emotion. You must not feel joy, sorrow, anger, despair—not even hunger. Do you understand what I mean?”

“I will remember.”
