Stella recounted as calmly and composedly as possible the events of the day when Will had attacked alongside the earth spirits.

She explained everything meticulously from start to finish, deliberately excluding as much emotion as she could.

She had worried Will might shock Kai or that he’d be deeply saddened by Will’s horrifying transformation, but his expression showed no visible disturbance.

The warmth Kai had shown just moments before vanished instantly, replaced by an icy demeanor—as if he had donned the emperor’s mask in the blink of an eye.

Though Stella felt relieved, she also found herself pitying Kai for hiding his emotions behind that blank expression.

He seemed unaware of this trait in himself. Accustomed to standing alone amid countless watchful eyes, he appeared more familiar with standing firm like a pillar than leaning on anyone else.

“Has he not shown up again since that day?”

“It’s quiet. That’s what makes me even more uneasy.”

Outwardly, Kai listened calmly, but inside, a storm of emotions raged.

Anger over the fact that Will had allied with the earth spirits to attack him and Stella, questions about Will’s motives, a vague sense of sympathy, and lingering regret over whether his master could still be saved.

It was astonishing how many emotions he could feel all at once—Kai’s heart was tangled in overwhelming complexity.

But above all else, he worried most that Stella might be attacked again by Will and the earth spirits when he wasn’t there to protect her.

“What could Duke Will’s true goal possibly be? Is he really after my pickaxe? Or is there something else hidden within Verdura Castle? And why doesn’t he attack directly—why does he always just stand outside the castle gates?”

It was truly frightening to become someone’s target. Only after voicing it aloud did Stella realize just how terrified she truly was.

She had swung her pickaxe as if possessed, but if he attacked again, she wasn’t sure she’d be able to rush forward like she had that time. Looking back now, she felt as though she hadn’t even been herself then.
