Stella was deeply grateful that Lois had come to see her, even if only in a dream before her departure, and she was overjoyed just to see his face one last time like this. Her hand, tightly clutching Kai’s, trembled faintly.

Stella’s hand resting on Kai’s felt small and warm. Afraid her slender fingers might break with even the slightest pressure, Kai carefully wrapped his hand around hers.

“Does it hurt a lot?”

At Kai’s question, Stella closed her eyes and pressed her cheek against his hand. Thinking this was truly the end, she felt she had nothing left to be shy or hide about. Instead, Kai stared at her with a startled expression.

“You? Were you not in much pain?”

Stella asked in a choked voice, still holding onto Kai’s hand.

Kai had barely sustained any injuries in the recent war. If anything, perhaps a minor scratch on his forearm—but even that had healed instantly the moment he applied a jihicho leaf.

“Thanks to you, it didn’t hurt at all.”

“Jihicho?”

Stella had believed Kai endured excruciating agony with jihicho before finally passing away. Though the jihicho she’d given him might have eased his pain momentarily, in the end, it hadn’t saved his life.

“I wanted to come here quickly.”

Tears finally spilled from Stella’s eyes. That this place was where he’d stopped on his final journey—Stella didn’t know what to say and could only weep sorrowfully.

If she herself felt this unbearably sad, how devastated must Lois’s family be? Her heart felt as if it were tearing apart.
