It was just as Melissa, having finished her preparations for departure and receiving anxious farewells from her family, was about to set off.

“Marchioness! Marchioness Melissa!”

At the sound of someone desperately calling her name from somewhere nearby, Melissa turned her horse’s head toward the voice while still seated on her mount. Behind her stood ranks upon ranks of soldiers and knights, stretching as far as the eye could see, all tense and lined up in formation.

The person galloping toward her, shouting her name, was someone Melissa knew well.

“Scholar Croft?”

Though they had crossed paths many times before, they were hardly close enough for him to come rushing after her with such urgency.

Instinctively disliking frail-looking men, she had found nothing appealing about him the first time they met.

Why was he so thin? Why did he wander around the imperial capital every day with sunken eyes? And why did he insist on doing things that put him at odds with the nobility?

But ever since learning that Kai held Croft in special regard, Melissa no longer disliked him.

Still, whenever she saw him, she couldn’t help but wonder how to make those flower-stem-thin arms of his thicker.

“What is it?”

“Marchioness! Hooah! Haah! Hnngh!”

It was his horse that had run, yet Croft panted as if the horse itself had ridden him here. Staggering as though about to collapse, he abruptly thrust a small box toward Melissa without even catching his breath.

“What’s this?”

There was no such thing as a gift without strings attached—especially not from someone who had no reason whatsoever to give her one.
