Stella, suppressing her growing anxiety, drew closer—then abruptly halted.

The area around where they stood had been utterly ravaged.

Just then, she felt a wriggling movement in her palm, and Esta suddenly lifted her head.

With drowsy eyes, Esta gazed at the ruined pumpkin and tomato patch, then slowly spoke.

“It’s the work of earth spirits.”

“What?”

Startled by Esta’s words, Stella blurted out a question—only to lock eyes with the servants turning around.

Stella shook her head as if nothing had happened and turned back to the children. The servants, thinking she was bowing her head out of deep sorrow, felt deeply sorry for her.

Meanwhile, Esta, chin propped in her hand, had already drifted back to sleep. Apparently, she hadn’t truly woken up after all.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, Stella couldn’t help but gently stroke Esta’s cheek—the sleeping child looked far too adorable. Even in her sleep, Esta seemed to sense the touch and smiled faintly.

“The guards,” Daren grumbled, glaring toward the castle gate. “They probably wouldn’t even notice if an army marched right into the palace.”

No matter how he thought about it, the garden being wrecked like this overnight clearly meant the guards hadn’t done their duty properly.

“Who on earth would dare sneak into the princess’s palace and ruin the field—no, the garden?!”

Daren had initially said “field” but quickly corrected himself to “garden,” fearing it sounded too common.

“I reported it to the knights outside as soon as I discovered it this morning. But they just came in, took one quick glance, and left again—they’re just standing there now. They don’t even seem to be reporting it anywhere. They came in, gawked, and left!”
