Pushed back by the gathering crowd, Madame Dietrich took a step backward. She bit her lip as she watched Marien standing at the center of the group.
Madam Schneider smiled serenely. How had she, who possessed no noble bloodline, ended up there? Why was she receiving everyone’s attention?
Accustomed to enjoying what was given to her, Madame Dietrich found it hard to accept that Marien had built all of this with her own hands.
At that moment, Marien, who had been leisurely surveying her surroundings, suddenly paused. She politely excused herself to the noblewomen surrounding her—“Please excuse me for a moment”—and left her spot.
Marien walked straight toward Christoph. The Duke of Bayern, who had been speaking with him just moments ago, was now on the opposite side of the banquet hall, and Christoph was in the middle of a conversation with a beautiful young lady.
Why had those two caught her attention? It was an ordinary scene, no different from usual.
As she walked, Marien remained lost in thought, unable to understand. For a brief instant, her gaze lingered on Christoph’s eyes.
“Oh.”
A soft gasp escaped Marien’s lips. It was a subtle change only she could detect—Christoph was smiling. The slight softening of his eyes was proof enough. That must have been why she’d noticed them.
Careful not to let her smile appear awkward, Marien gently curved the corners of her mouth and stepped between the two.
“You seem to be enjoying yourselves, Christoph. What were you talking about?”
