Jan scratched his head with an embarrassed expression. Florian clicked his tongue and muttered, “This guy doesn’t have an ounce of tact.”

Marien looked at Jan with a pitying gaze—as if even dog dung had its uses, but Jan was somehow worse than that.

When their eyes met, Jan gave her a questioning look. Instead of answering, she awkwardly tugged at the corner of her mouth and averted her eyes.

“Now then.”

Nicholas clapped his hands sharply, as if taking charge of the mood. Just as he was about to speak, a uniformed officer approached and whispered something into his ear.

Only after the officer left did Nicholas speak again.

“Maxim and Florian, interrogate Bruno Falkenhein. He was arrested in the basement where Jenny was imprisoned, so he won’t be able to wriggle out of it. Get him to confess to deceiving Countess Wolfgang and selling the painting—and of course, also about imprisoning Jenny.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Leave it to us.”

“And recover the 25 million gold he received from Countess Wolfgang.”
