Christoph frowned faintly. Marquis Schneider’s gaze turned toward him. Marien hastily opened her mouth.

“Of course, there are people who aren’t pleased that I became an officer. But that’s a problem I must overcome myself, Your Grace. If I don’t overcome it on my own, these kinds of incidents will keep happening. So please give me a chance. Although I started thanks to your influence, it was only because I couldn’t even stand at the starting line otherwise. Now that I’m standing there, I want to prove myself through my own ability from here on.”

Marien stared at the flickering candle flame. Beyond the wavering light, the faces of noblewomen who had once dismissed her shimmered in her memory.

They hadn’t yielded to Marien herself—they had merely bowed to the title of Madam Schneider.

That position hadn’t been earned by Marien’s strength, but by Christoph and the Schneider family’s power. Thus, they fawned over her to her face while slandering her behind her back.

Therefore, this time, she wanted to prove herself through her own strength—without leaning on the name Schneider.

“Who was it?”

At that moment, a cold voice crossed the dining table. Marien, shaken from her brief reverie, slowly lifted her gaze.

Christoph seemed to understand exactly what she was thinking and stared at her with eyes hardened like stone.

“Who was it? Those bastards who dared speak ill of you.”

His voice was chilling, as if grinding down his anger. His pitch-black eyes pierced straight through her. Marien widened her eyes slightly, then quietly tugged at the corner of her lips.

“It’s all in the past, Christoph.”

Christoph clenched his jaw. Her words meant “time out.” Christoph hadn’t been there for Marien when she needed him.
