Marien’s eyes wavered. She held her breath silently and listened intently to Nicholas’s voice. Her tightly clenched fists tensed further.

It was a question she couldn’t possibly ask Christoph. She had ignored his warning to be cautious and grown close to Liam, leaving her utterly speechless—she wouldn’t have known what to say even if she had ten mouths.

Even if he hadn’t intended to harm Marien.

Yet she was curious. What had become of him after helping Marien escape and facing Leonhard’s group alone? It weighed on her like a debt of conscience.

“He was alive. His injuries were severe, but he was definitely alive when we reached that farm.”

Injuries.

At that word, Marien unconsciously gulped. Nicholas shook his head lightly.

“I didn’t have the chance to worry about him either. As you know, Madam Schneider and Lord Schneider fell from the cliff one after another… Ah, though ‘leapt’ would be more accurate than ‘fell’ for Lord Schneider, but regardless.”

Nicholas paused briefly there and stared straight at her.

“I was overwhelmed dealing with the aftermath. Though I couldn’t arrest His Highness Leonhard, I had to ensure not a single thug present escaped capture. At the same time, I needed to launch a boat to search for the two of them. When I finally returned to that house after the storm had passed and I’d regained my senses—”

“He was gone.”

“Oh.”

Marien let out a sigh. Whether it was relief or regret, she couldn’t tell. Only that it felt like a very Franz Beckenbauer-esque exit.
