“For example?”

“For example, sailors or couriers. But nowhere is there any mention of knots.”

Marien rubbed her dry eyes. She’d been holed up in the study since getting home from work, yet still hadn’t found it—meaning the book she sought probably didn’t exist at all.

Christoph twisted his upper body and laid her down across his lap. Marien startled, her body jerking slightly in surprise, then fidgeted as she tried to sit up.

“Shh.”

Christoph slowly massaged her eyelids, pressing her brow and stroking her temples.

“Haa…”

Only then did Marien finally relax, releasing a satisfied sigh at the cool, pleasant sensation. His gentle fingers gradually grew heavier, more deliberate.

His fingertips, which had been lingering near her eyes, drifted to stroke her cheeks and trace her lips. His long, well-shaped fingers eventually slipped between her teeth.

“Books about sailors or couriers are inevitably sparse—their knowledge is passed down through apprenticeship, not books.”

Marien couldn’t utter another word. Under his unwavering gaze, she felt like a butterfly trapped in a spider’s web, utterly unable to move.

“Let’s go to the harbor together tomorrow.”

As he spoke, Christoph’s thumb gently pressed against her earlobe. Marien tensed, bracing her body against the urge to jump. His words barely registered in her ears.
