“Alright. And although Veronica’s case was hastily handled by the detectives, leaving no clues behind, we’re now in charge of Iliza Schulze’s case, so we might find something. Ah!”

As if suddenly remembering something, Marien cast a fervent glance toward Christoph.

“After work today, may I go to the castle? There’s something I need to check in the Marquis’s study—the knot of the rope Iliza Schulze used to hang herself. It was an unusual shape I’d never seen before. Maybe I can find some information about it.”

He nodded and, feigning nonchalance, asked casually,

“Will you be staying overnight?”

“Mrs. List might be waiting, so I’m just asking whether I should send someone. I don’t know why you’d misunderstand, but I truly have no other intention, Marien.”

Somehow, his excuse sounded worse than saying nothing at all. Nevertheless, Christoph calmly sipped his coffee, pretending nothing was amiss.

“I’ll stay. Please send someone to inform Mrs. List.”

“Very well.”
