“Isabella. You’re smart, so you understand what Father means, don’t you?”

She couldn’t answer that she understood, nor could she ask what he meant. She’d realized it instinctively.

That child in Father’s arms was the youngest sibling Mother had so eagerly awaited—and that child had already died… not even after birth, but even before.

And now, she was terribly worried about Mother.

“Mother is…”

“She fainted from the prolonged labor pains. She briefly woke up just to nurse the baby, then immediately collapsed again. They quickly gave her a strong sleeping draught. She won’t wake for several days.”

Father’s eyes looked resolute, as if he’d done a great deal of thinking during that time.

“So I’ll… settle this quickly. You know how heartbroken your mother would be if she found out. You know how much she’d been hoping for this child.”
