I jolted awake with a sensation as if something were choking me. Coughing erupted uncontrollably through the gaps between Ian’s fingers as he massaged my throat.

The feeling was startlingly vivid—too sharp to be just a dream. Pressing firmly against his oddly trembling chest, he sat up in bed.

Certain he wouldn’t fall back asleep, Ian stepped out of his room. The palace corridor, lit only by scattered wall sconces, was eerily silent.

“Your Highness, shall I follow you?”

A knight from the Royal Guard, who had been standing guard like a shadow outside the room, approached and asked.

“No need. I’ll just take a short walk…”

Ian’s words trailed off. He sensed movement from the opposite corridor. The footsteps echoing on the floor ceased, and soon Calisto appeared.

“I thought I heard voices, so I came to check—and it was you, Ian.”

“Your Majesty, why are you walking alone at such a late hour?”

Calisto chuckled lightly, as if it were no concern at all. Of course—the Emperor always had his elite guard secretly trailing him wherever he went. They were surely watching from somewhere even now.

“I woke up and couldn’t fall back asleep. Judging by your expression, you seem to be in the same state?”

“Yes. I had a strange dream.”

“What kind of strange dream?”

An anxious flicker crossed Calisto’s face as he asked.

“No need to worry. It was just an unusually vivid dream.”
