“He said that God promised to protect us while we remain on this land.”

“Promise?”

I held the book close to my chest and stepped out of the room. As I walked down the corridor, I called out Hudro’s name urgently, but there was no reply.

Since I couldn’t sense anyone’s presence inside, had he gone outside?

Just as I turned toward the entrance, I heard the creaking sound of a door.

“Sir Knight?”

Turning around, I saw Hudro standing there motionless, holding a tray. He stepped inside the building, furrowed his brows as if asking what was going on, then spoke again.

“Were you perhaps looking for something?”

“I was looking for something, but it seems a bit ambiguous.”

“Please go back to your room. I’ll follow right behind you.”

I hurried toward the room, and impatient footsteps trailed after me. Pushing the door wide open, I watched as Hudro entered right after me and immediately set the tray down on the table.

“Which part is it?”

“Here.”

I opened the book I’d been holding and pointed to the top of the right-hand page.

‘After the funeral of the High Priest, Luca, daughter of the temple cleaner, presented herself before Lawrence, who had just been appointed as the next High Priest. Luca claimed she had heard the voice of God the previous night and conveyed His promise that He would protect us while we remain on this land.
